    MLB Playoffs: Pete Alonso’s 3-run homer leads Mets to comeback Game 3 NL wild-card series win over Brewers

    The New York Mets scored 11 points in the first two games of their National League wild-card playoff series with the Milwaukee Brewers. But their bats were quiet for eight innings in a decisive Game 3.

    However, the lineup came alive against Brewers closer Devin Williams in the ninth. Williams walked Francisco Lindor to lead off the inning. He advanced to third base on a single by Brandon Nimmo. Then Williams hung a switch at 80 mph (130 km/h) on Pete Alonso, who didn’t miss his pitch.

    Williams followed up his miserable ninth by hitting Jesse Winker with a pitch. Winker then stole second base to put himself in scoring position and Starling Marte brought him home with a double to add another run for the Mets, for a 4-2 lead.

    As he should have been, Winker was extremely excited to score his point. He may have broken his batting helmet after crossing home plate. But Winker knew how big that run was. With their 4-2 victory, the Mets advance to the NL division series to face the Philadelphia Phillies.

    David Peterson closed out the win for the Mets, forcing Brice Turang into a game-ending double play after giving up a leadoff single to Sal Frelick. Fittingly, the double play was turned by Lindor, who was the Mets’ lone offense until Nimmo and Alonso became heroes in the ninth inning.

    Milwaukee’s bats also didn’t make much noise through six innings, but finally turned up the volume in the seventh.

    Jake Bauers led off the inning with a pinch-hit home run off Mets reliever José Buttó, crushing an 90-mph changeup across the plate into the right-field seats.

    On the next pitch, Frelick crushed a 96 mph fastball low and inside out the park to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead.

    Tobias Myers had an excellent start for Milwaukee, allowing no runs and two hits (both to Lindor) over five innings. He struck out five Mets batters with no walks in 66 pitches.

    Combined with last Saturday’s relief appearance, Myers pitched nine scoreless innings against the Mets with just three hits allowed and 10 strikeouts.

    Yet the Mets lineup had nothing for the Brewers bullpen either. Three Milwaukee relievers — including Game 1 starter Freddy Peralta, who threw 68 pitches in the series opener — allowed no runs and no hits over the next three innings.

    Veteran Jose Quintana pitched almost as well for the Mets, allowing four hits in six scoreless innings with five strikeouts and one walk. He threw 94 pitches and ended the sixth inning with authority, striking out Willy Adames and Gary Sánchez.

    Edwin Díaz and Peterson gave the Mets a chance to rally, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings after Butto gave up two runs. Diaz walked two in his 1 2/3 frames, but struck out three batters.

    The Mets went 6-7 against the Phillies as NL East division rivals during the regular season. Before you reference that record, remember that New York went 1-5 against the Brewers. Game 1 of their NLDS is scheduled for Saturday at 4:08 PM ET from Citizens Bank Park.

      Frelick had to watch Pete Alonso’s go-ahead home run drive over the fence over him, but he led off the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff single. The crowd at American Family Field is getting excited again. Ryne Stanek is now warming up for the Mets.

    • David Peterson comes in for Mets with a two-point lead

      The Brewers finally close out the top of the ninth inning and need two runs in the bottom of the ninth. David Peterson comes in to close out the game after Edwin Diaz threw 39 pitches in 1 2/3 innings.

    • Mets added another run in the top of the ninth

      Things get worse for the Brewers. Jesse Winker reached on a HBP, stole second base and then scored an insurance run on a Starling Marte single. Winker was so excited at home plate that he jammed his helmet and broke it.

      For eight innings, the Mets’ bats were silent. But they came alive against Brewers closer Devin Williams. After Williams walked Francisco Lindor and gave up a single to Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso put the Mets ahead with a three-run homer.

    • Mets can’t answer in the 8th

      The Mets had to answer in the top of the eighth inning after giving up two runs. But Freddy Peralta put them down 1-2-3, eliminating Starling Marte, Tyrone Taylor and Francisco Alvarez in 13 pitches.

      Peralta, by the way, threw 68 pitches in the starting Game 1.

    • Edwin Diaz comes in to keep the Brewers in check

      Mets manager Carlos Mendoza brought in closer Edwin Diaz in the 7th after Jose Butto served up back-to-back home runs. With how poorly the Mets were hitting, Mendoza knew he couldn’t afford to give up any more runs.

      Diaz walked Brice Turang to start his outing. And Turang advanced to second base on a stolen base, threatening more runs for the Brewers. Diaz got Jackson Chourio out before walking Blake Perkins, who then stole second while Turang stole third. But the Mets’ closer struck out William Contreras, leaving Milwaukee within two runs for the entire inning.

    • Back-to-back home runs for the Brewers

      Pinch-hitter Jake Bauers opens the 7th inning with a homerun off reliever Jose Butto. And Sal Frelick follows with a home run of his own on the next pitch, giving Milwaukee a 2-0 lead.

      Butto had an excellent season for the Mets, striking out 79 batters in 74 innings. But he served up two home runs at the worst time.

      The Mets’ bats remain quiet. Nick Mears retired all three batters he faced, striking out Pete Alonso and Jesse Winker in the 7th inning.

      New York has two hits so far in the game.

      Jose Quintana ends the 6th inning with 1-2-3, striking out Willy Adames and Gary Sanchez. The veteran was fired up after making Sanchez swing and miss to end the inning.

      Nick Mears has been brought in for the Brewers to pitch the 7th inning.

      Jackson Chourio walked with two outs in the 5th inning and got into scoring position on a stolen base. But he stranded when Blake Perkins grounded to the short stop.

      Trevor Magill (2.72 ERA, 50 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings) will pitch for the Brewers.

      Handshakes and hugs in the Brewers dugout indicate Tobias Myers is ready for Game 3.

      He had an excellent performance, allowing just two hits in five innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Myers threw 66 pitches, which might raise an eyebrow among Brewers fans wondering why manager Pat Murphy is cutting him.

      Tobias Myers continues to captivate the Mets’ lineup. Only Francisco Lindor has had a hit against him. And after hitting Jesse Winker to lead off the 5th, Myers struck out Starling Marte and Tyrone Taylor before Francisco Alvarez got a pop out to first base to end the top of the inning.
