MLB playoff scores, live updates: Mets visit Phillies, Guardians dominate Tigers on ALDS, NLDS Game 1 Saturday

The 2024 MLB postseason continues with the start of the best-of-five Division Series on Saturday. Three of the wild card round series ended in 2–0 sweeps, with the Tigers, Royals and Padres having two days off to determine their lineups and rotations for the next round, while the Mets needed three games to eliminate the Brewers.

Saturday’s Game 1s will be played in Cleveland and New York (AL) and Philadelphia and Los Angeles (NL). Both National League Division Series play Game 2 on Sunday, and both American League Division Series continue with Game 2 on Monday.

Which teams will take an early lead heading into the Championship Series? Follow live updates, highlights and more below.

The Cleveland Guardians won Game 1 in impressive fashion with a 7-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Cleveland started the game strong, with a five-run first inning, highlighted by Lane Thomas’ three-run homer. Thomas sent Reese Olson’s first relief pitch over the left field wall.

Olson calmed things down over the next few innings, but the Guardians got to reliever Sean Guenther in the bottom of the sixth, when David Fry’s two-run double extended their lead to 7-0.

Guardians starter Tanner Bibee pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed zero runs on four hits while striking out six.

Game 2 will take place on Monday at 4:08 PM ET at Progressive Field. The likely starting pitchers are Tarik Skubal for the Tigers and Matthew Boyd for the Guardians.

Here’s a look at the four Game 1s scheduled for Saturday and how to watch them:

Live66 updates

  • Ryne Stanek, not Edwin Diaz, comes in to close things out for the Mets. Diaz may still be recharging after a 39-pitch performance two days ago.

  • Mets scores another run

And now Brandon Nimmo singles to score Bader and make it 6-1. Hug the Philly fans in your life.

  • The Phillies appeared to throw out Harrison Bader on a stolen base attempt, but the referee rules that Bryson Stott bobbled the ball after the tag and calls Bader safe. Exactly how things are going in Philadelphia right now.

  • Royals take a 1-0 lead

Yuli Gurriel scores on a 2-out sacrifice fly by Tommy Pham, putting Kansas City on the board first.

Royals 1, Yankees 0 move to the bottom of the 2nd.

  • Salvador Perez out at the plate

The Royals coach at third base made a questionable call, allowing Salvador Perez to come off second and try to score on a single by MJ Melendez.

Juan Soto threw Perez at home for the first out of the second inning.

  • NYM-PHI: Phillies fail to score in the 8th

Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos threatened with back-to-back two-out hits, but Alec Bohm grounded in on a fielder’s choice to keep the inning scoreless for the Phillies. It will be the back half of the Phillies’ order in the bottom of the ninth, with at least four runs scored.

  • Gleyber Torres out at the plate

Gleyber Torres tried to score from third base with one out on a grounder to first base by Austin Wells.

However, Yuli Gurriel threw to catcher Salvador Perez, who tagged out Torres.

The Yankees had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but Michael Wacha struck out Aaron Judge, followed by Giancarlo Stanton on Wells’ fielder’s choice to end the threat.

  • Now with a significant lead in hand, the Mets made some defensive changes. Harrison Bader takes over at center, Luis Torrens at catcher and Luisangel Acuna at second. Jose Iglesias moves from second to third and Tyrone Taylor moves from center to right.

Phil Maton is going to pitch.

  • Hoffman had a 2.17 ERA in 66.1 innings this season. Strahm had a 1.87 ERA in 62.2 innings. Kerkering had an ERA of 2.29 in 63 innings. That was the Phillies’ three best relievers being tortured for nearly half an hour.

  • The inning eventually ends with Tyrone Taylor pop-out. The Phillies now have some work to do against the back end of the Mets bullpen.

  • And now a Starling Marte sacrifice fly flies. 5-1 Met. Every New York batter has either reached base or driven in a run this inning.

  • JD Martinez welcomes Kerkering with another single and scores another run. It’s 4-1 Mets with runners on the corners and one out. The Mets are 5-for-5 so far this inning.

  • Aaron Judge tracks Bobby Witt Jr.’s fly. in midfield

Aaron Judge doesn’t just hit home runs. He can take it in midfield.

It looked like Bobby Witt Jr. was going to get an extra base hit into the left-center gap, but Judge ran over to make the catch for the second out of the first inning.

  • Imagine throwing eight consecutive 0-2 pitches and not getting an out.

  • In case it wasn’t painful enough for Philly, Iglesias goes for a 10-pitch at-bat that ends with a single. Orion Kerkering replaces Strahm with runners on first and second base and one out. Just an absolute disaster for the Phillies.

  • Sounds stressful, but ultimately fun.

  • Pete Alonso hits a high ball for the first inning, but he scores another run. It’s 3-1 Mets, runner on first and one out with Jose Iglesias on.

  • Mets take the lead with a single from Brandon Nimmo

And now Nimmo is competing for a go-ahead single. The Mets have reached base four times in a row to open the eighth, and they still have runners on the corners and no outs.

  • Mark Vientos scores the tying run for the Mets in the 8th

There it is. Vientos singles to left and scores Alvarez to tie the game at 1-1 in the eighth. He and Lindor also advanced, putting runners on second and third base with no outs. The Phillies respond by signing Hoffman for Matt Strahm, who will face Brandon Nimmo.

  • 44 years later, Royals and Yankees meet in postseason

The Royals and Yankees last faced each other in the postseason during the 1980 American League Championship Series. Kansas City defeated New York in three games.

The Royals then lost to the Phillies in the World Series
