Turnover number two for MSU

Turnovers were an issue last year, this first quarter has shown no sign of that changing. Chiles worked the length of the field to get MSU into the red zone, including finding tight end Michael Masunas twice for big plays, but Montorie Foster Jr. fumbled the ball away and FAU would take over in the shadows of their own end zone.

The first points of the year come from the MSU D

Hello D’quan Douse. The Georgia Tech transfer gets a sack in the end zone to provide the first points of the 2024 season. MSU leads 2-0 and gets the ball with decent field position on a nice return by Alante Brown.

Drive stalls, but field position turns around

The first sustained drive for Michigan State’s offense featured a flashy throw from Chiles and a couple of nice runs from Nathan Carter, but a fumble on third down by Chiles halted the momentum. Chiles recovered his own fumble, leading to a Ryan Eckley punt set up at the FAU 1-yard line.

MSU defense stands strong

Michigan State followed up the choice by limiting FAU to 3-and-out. Chiles and the offense regain possession at their own 20.

First game results in Chilean choice

There have been better starts to seasons in program history. Aidan Chiles throws an interception on the first scrimmage of the year. The Spartan defense is next as FAU takes over at its own 45.

MSU gets ball to start

Florida Atlantic wins the toss and defers. Spartan ball first

Michigan State opens the 2024 season, the season that will mark the Jonathan Smith era, against Florida Atlantic at Spartan Stadium.

The original 7 p.m. start time was moved to 7:10 p.m. due to a lightning delay in the area. MSU said stadium gates would open at 6:15 p.m.

Michigan State is coming off a tough 4-8 season that saw former head coach Mel Tucker fired midway through the season.

Smith is set to begin his tenure as head coach in East Lansing after leading Oregon State for six years, including the last three with winning seasons. Smith was named the 2022 Co-Pac 12 Coach of the Year.

A number of Smith’s players at Oregon State followed him to Michigan State, most notably quarterback Aidan Chiles. Chiles is entering his sophomore season after barely playing as a freshman last year. The highly touted transfer makes his first start at the college level tonight.

Florida Atlantic is led by former Texas coach Tom Herman, who is entering his second season after a 4-8 winning season last year.
