Mexico, Canada fail to impress in draw; USMNT holds its own against New Zealand

All the big boys in CONCACAF were in action Tuesday night as the United States took on New Zealand, while Mexico and Canada squared off. Here’s what happened.

Mexico 0-0 Canada

Mexico and Canada drew 0-0 in Dallas and the international period ended with an exciting match.

It was certainly not a classic opening 45 minutes as neither team got hold of the ball and created no significant chances.

Mexico had the best chance of the game after the break when Santi Giménez got behind the Canadian defence, but the striker was unable to tap the ball past the advancing keeper.

After an impressive win against the United States last time out, Canada failed to impress this time around, while Mexico continues to struggle as they attempt to gain a foothold in CONCACAF.

USA 1-1 New Zealand

Goalscorers: Pulisic 69′; Ben Waine 89′

Although the United States had the most possession and the most scoring chances, they could do no more than a friendly draw against New Zealand in Cincinnati.

For the first 45 minutes, the United States dominated all aspects of the game except where it mattered most: putting the ball in the net.

Ricardo Pepi looked to have put the US ahead when he fired a shot into the bottom corner, but a late rejection from the linesman saw the goal disallowed.

As was lamented in the final days of the Gregg Berhalter era, the Stars and Stripes regularly managed to get the ball into dangerous areas after the break, but the final pass or goal was always missing.

It seemed all that was missing was some stardust. Coming off the bench around the hour mark, Christian Pulisic opened the scoring with a delicate finish from inside the penalty area.

The home side’s luck was spoiled in the dying minutes when a deflected New Zealand shot somehow evaded Matt Turner, bouncing just over the keeper’s head and into the net to help the visitors level the score.
