Mega Millions jackpot rises to $681 million after 25th drawing without a winner

After nearly three months without a winner, the Mega Millions jackpot has grown to an estimated $681 million, one of the largest in the game’s history.

The jackpot started rolling in June, after a Illinois player won $552 million, according to Mega Millions. Since then, there have been 25 drawings, but no jackpot winners. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350, according to Mega Millions.

The next drawing will take place on Tuesday, September 4. If a winner is announced, he or she will take home the seventh-largest jackpot in the game’s history and the largest Mega Millions prize in the month of September.

If the winner chooses a cash prize, he or she will take home $336.1 million, according to Mega Millions. Players can also accept a series of annuity payments over 30 years.

Only two other people have taken home the Mega Millions jackpot this year. For the Illinois winner in June, a Player from New Jersey won a whopping $1.128 billion. That prize is still unclaimed, but players in the state have one year from the drawing date to claim it.

Since 2018, Mega Millions has produced six jackpots of over $1 billion, with the largest prize being a staggering $1.602 billion. Winners have lived in South Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Maine, Florida and most recently New Jersey.

There are huge prizes to be won more common — and that’s no coincidence, Victor Matheson, an economics professor at the College of the Holy Cross, told CBS News in 2023. The Multi-State Lottery Association, a nonprofit that coordinates the Mega Millions game, designed it to create bigger prizes, and the lottery’s transformation into a nationwide game means more people are diving into the jackpot. The ticket price has also doubled, and there are more number options available, making it even harder to win.
