Maui resident and her husband celebrate big wins after their series ‘Shogun’ wins 18 Emmys

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Maui resident and her husband celebrated big on Sunday at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, as their series “Shogun” broke records with a total of 18 Emmys.

Maui-based Rachel Kondo and her husband Justin Marks are the creators behind the new 2024 American series, “Shogun.”

In addition to winning best drama series, “Shogun” star Hiroyuki Sanada won best actor in a drama and his co-star Anna Sawai won best actress. They are the first Japanese actors to win these categories.

The series won a record 14 Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last week.

“Shogun” is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. In 1980, it was made into a miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain.

Kondo grew up in Pukalani and graduated from Maui High School. She and Marks were recently named among the 44 Career Achievement Award winners at this year’s Hawaii International Film Festival.

With HIFF kicking off next month, Kondo and Marks will be in Hawaii at Consolidated Kahala on October 11 for “Shogun: An Evening with Showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo.”

Other Emmy highlights:
  • “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” won for best scripted variety series, and he paid tribute to his dog, who recently passed away.
  • Richard Gadd won Best Actor in a Limited Series for “Baby Reindeer.” He later returned to the stage when the show won Best Limited Series.
  • “Hacks” pulled off a surprise victory, winning best comedy, beating out last season’s winner, “The Bear,” which had the most comedy nominations and was a strong contender to repeat.
