Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has sparked backlash after appearing to suggest Democrats can “control the weather.”

“Yes, they can control the weather,” the Georgia Republican wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday evening. “It’s ridiculous when someone lies and says it can’t be done.”

Her comments come after Hurricane Helene ripped through the southeastern US after making landfall in Florida last week, causing damage from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia.

“This is a map of hurricane-affected areas with an overlay of political party electoral maps showing how hurricane destruction could affect the election,” she wrote.

Newsweek reached out to Greene’s office via email after business hours for comment.

Many took to social media to criticize and mock Greene for the comments.

The congresswoman has a history of promoting conspiracy theories. In 2021, she was stripped of her committee assignments by the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives due to her embrace of conspiracy theories, racist comments and her past endorsement of violence against leading Democrats.

Russell Foster, a former Democratic congressional candidate in Texas, wrote, “If we can control the weather, why the hell do we have such droughts around the world and the wildfires getting worse every year? Gallons of water America needs now and stop the fires. Marjorie Taylor Greene is dumb AF.”

Harry Sisson, a Democratic content creator, told Greene, “You’re dumber than a bag of rocks.”

“We know you’re the dumbest member of Congress. You don’t have to remind us every day,” the Republicans Against Trump account wrote in response to one of Greene’s posts.

But some suggested Greene was right, with one person responding with a message about cloud seeding. Cloud Seeding, a method developed in the 1940s, involves dispersing particles into clouds to help produce rain. But experts say it will cause only a small increase in precipitation, not devastating downpours.

One person, Matt Culley, board secretary of The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association, wrote: “They’re taking a little bit of truth (cloud seeding) and sensationalizing it. Trying to imply hurricanes may be man-made lol. “
