Magnitude 4.7 earthquake shakes parts of Southern California

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake has been detected in Ventura County, California.

The quake, which struck at 7:28 a.m., had its epicenter about 4 miles north of Malibu, the USGS said. The USGS recorded at least five aftershocks, the largest of which — measured at a magnitude of 3.5 — struck less than a mile from the epicenter, at 9:37 a.m.

According to experts, earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 to 5 are usually accompanied by mild shaking and very light to no damage.

According to CNN reporters in the area, the quake was felt in downtown Los Angeles. Many residents were warned via the USGS ShakeAlert system just before they felt the quake.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported no damage to infrastructure and no injuries. Firefighters from more than 100 fire stations were dispatched to investigate by land, air and sea.

The epicenter of the earthquake was close to the Malibu Fault, said seismologist Lucy Jones, a geophysical research associate at the California Institute of Technology.

“The information we have about this doesn’t make a clear association with that fault,” Jones said at an afternoon news conference. “As far as that region, like everywhere in Southern California, every one of us is within five miles of an active fault.”

“This is a very good reminder that the silence of the past decades is not the future, and that we must be prepared,” she said.

Jones said California experiences an average of eight earthquakes of magnitude 4 or greater this time of year, but the state has experienced 14 so far in 2024.

“I thought it would never stop. I started thinking it was the big one because we’ve had all these little earthquakes,” Joanne Gary, who lives in Malibu, told CNN affiliate KABC.

Millions of people in the region, including Malibu, Westlake Village, Agoura, Thousand Oaks and Los Angeles, felt the earthquake.
