Lynx’s Napheesa Collier and Fever’s Caitlin Clark are being compared to Red Grange and Tiger Woods in growing the WNBA and women’s basketball

Collier, along with New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, is the founder of Unrivaled, a women’s three-on-three league set to launch in Miami in January. It will give WNBA players a chance to earn money during the off-season without having to play overseas.

In this respect, Collier is somewhat like the great running back Red Grange, who capitalized on his popularity by mounting an impressive soccer tour that helped popularize soccer in America.

Clark reminds me of someone more recent and much more influential.

When Tiger Woods joined the PGA Tour at age 20, he was met with jealousy and disbelief.

Long before Fuzzy Zoeller made racist comments about Woods at the Masters, other golf pros were simply disgusted by what they saw as Woods’ undeserved fame. They thought he was a sideshow, a novelty, rather than someone who would dominate the tour.

They were wrong in many ways. Woods would blow away the field at the Masters when he was 21 and would go on to become perhaps the most dominant golfer ever in his prime.
