Liverpool 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Forest end 55-year wait at Anfield

A stunning second-half strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi provided a surprise for Nottingham Forest, who recorded their first win at Anfield in 55 years with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Saturday.

Tricky Trees remain unbeaten thanks to a brilliant counter-attack, started by newcomer Nikola Milenkovic and completed by super-subs Anthony Elanga and Hudson-Odoi, which takes Forest to eight points.

Liverpool were on a perfect 3-0-0 record after losing to Manchester United in week 3, but new manager Arne Slot saw his team concede a goal for the first time in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest are coming off a big win and have also had some decent results against lesser opponents, having beaten Southampton and drawn at Bournemouth and Wolves. Nuno Espirito Santo has retained Morgan Gibbs-White and is showing the Tricky Trees some success and composure at the wheel of what has been a wild ride over the last two seasons.

Nuno Espirito Santo presses the right buttons at the right time

Nottingham Forest were in control for 45 minutes and the second half started in the same vein. Nuno Espirito Santo knew a draw at Anfield would be accepted, if not praised, but instead chose to go for it.

The Forest manager removed the stability and length of the wingers – Elliot Anderson and Nicolas Dominguez – and brought in creative attackers Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

It paid off!

Nikola Milenkovic’s leaping counterattack turned into Elanga’s superb long-range assist across the pitch for Hudson-Odoi, who fired a pinpoint missile across goal and just inside the low post. The superb pass curled around one of Liverpool’s substitutes, Conor Bradley, and it feels like a masterstroke from Forest’s unbeaten boss.

What now?

Liverpool need to find their finishing boots for a Tuesday trip to AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League. They return to Anfield for a 10am ET Saturday (September 21) clash with Bournemouth.

Things aren’t getting any easier for Forest as they head to Brighton on Sunday, September 22 at 9am (ET).

Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest Live Updates — By Nick Mendola

Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest final score: 0-1

Callum Hudson-Odoi (73′)

Reds keep pushing

Conor Bradley and Virgil van Dijk created good chances, but Murillo stopped the first chance, after which VVD’s header went over the keeper and off the crossbar.

Super sharp goal from the visitors! Liverpool 0-1 Forest (73rd minute)

This is special stuff.

Nikola Milenkovic makes a great tackle on the edge of the 18-meter line of Bos 40 and with that the visitors get the starting signal.

Super subs score big as Anthony Elanga delivers a super-sharp, curling cross to Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Hudson-Odoi is given some space by Bradley, dribbles centrally and curls the ball low into the far post.

Wow! 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool are getting closer as time goes by

Arne Slot replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold with Alexis Mac Allister in midfield, bringing Conor Bradley to right back. Liverpool started to have more and more chances.

Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez also feature – ahead of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz – while Forest’s introductions of Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi have made them more difficult on the counter.

0-0, 71′

Salah becomes sharper

The Egyptian king is now cooking and has finally shaken Alex Moreno into the box.

A few quick movements lead to a hard shot, but Sels is not deterred and blocks the attempt in the 52nd minute.

Half time score — Liverpool 0-0 Nottingham Forest

Forest have not attempted a single shot and have only 34% possession.

Mohamed Salah was busy, but not at his sharpest, and Matz Sels was also well present for the visitors.

Anfield looks ready for this and Liverpool are in full control, apart from the scoreboard. But that is an important qualification.

The Tricky Trees have two players with yellow cards: Alex Moreno and Ryan Yates. The latter is always on the edge of someone else.

Reds set up an Olimpico

Virgil van Dijk is standing right behind forest ranger Matz Sels, and there is also traffic in front of him.

Forest try to move VVD while Trent Alexander-Arnold tries to hit the corner into the goal. Sels saves it off the line.

Liverpool try to create another chance and Sels makes a superb save in the 37th minute.

Slow start eventually yields opportunities

The first 20 minutes were intense and tense, but here are a few moments.

Murillo plays Morgan Gibbs-White into the penalty area. He dinks wide of the far post, past Alisson Becker but not the goal line or the assistant referee’s flag.

At the other end, Alexis Mac Allister brings on Diogo Jota, but he can’t do much against a tricky but dangerous chance.

Still no goals, 27′.

Liverpool vs nottingham forest team news

More of the same for Liverpool, and that’s no surprise, as Forest look to meet a 4-2-3-1 with a 4-2-3-1. Can James Ward-Prowse and Ryan Yates mess up Liverpool’s dominant midfield enough to allow the Tricky Trees to flourish in attack? And can Elliot Anderson and Nicolas Dominguez pose enough of a threat to keep Liverpool’s full-backs in line?

Liverpool line-up

Alisson, Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate, Alexander-Arnold, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Diaz, Szoboszlai, Salah, Jota.

Nottingham Forest line-up

Sels, Aina, Milenkovic, Murillo, Moreno, Yates, Ward-Prowse, Dominguez, Gibbs-White, Anderson, Wood.

Liverpool focus, team news

Liverpool are still managed by Mohamed Salah and watched by goalkeeper Alisson Becker and centre-back Virgil van Dijk, with Salah and Van Dijk both in the picture for new contracts at the legendary club. Arne Slot waits to see if Federico Chiesa is ready for his Premier League debut.

Focus on Nottingham Forest, team news

Chris Wood has found the net and the Kiwi is enjoying the continued strong play of set-up man Morgan Gibbs-White. Ibrahim Sangare and Elliot Anderson are also impressing for the Tricky Trees.

Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest prediction

This is certainly a step too far for Forest’s plans for an extended unbeaten run. They could threaten to score a goal or two and even put an end to the Reds’ perfect defensive record, but an early goal would be crucial for both sides. Slots Liverpool look capable of controlling every game. At Anfield? They should be even stronger. Liverpool 3-1 Bos.
