Live updates as Category 2 storm makes landfall in Louisiana

The American Red Cross is preparing food and supplies and making plans to recover from the effects of Hurricane Francine.

“I see in front of me … trucks loaded to the brim with food, but also non-perishable meals, snacks, cots, cleaning kits, things that people need right after a disaster,” Stephanie Fox, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross, told AccuWeather.

Fox said that once it is safe, the American Red Cross will assess the damage, provide shelter and meals and talk to local officials to determine which areas were hardest hit — from coastal Louisiana to states like Arkansas and Missouri.

She also said the Red Cross’ biggest concern is that people take the storm seriously.

“Please do not travel later today,” Fox said. “Remain crouched.”

If you need a shelter or emergency assistance, you can call the Red Cross at 800-RED-CROSS. The nonprofit also recommends visiting http://redcross.org/shelters and downloading the Red Cross Emergency app.
