Little Italy’s San Gennaro Festival Starts Thursday: Here’s What You Need to Know

One of New York City’s most famous festivals is back.

Beginning Thursday evening, Feast of San Gennaro serves the best of Manhattan’s Little Italy, including favorite Italian dishes, cultural attractions, live entertainment and religious processions.

The 11-day street festival began 98 years ago as a modest, one-day affair organized by immigrants from Naples who wanted to honor their patron saint, St. Gennaro, who Catholics believe was martyred in 305 AD amid religious persecution led by Roman Emperor Diocletian.

Since then, the celebration has expanded significantly, extending far beyond Mulberry Street, where many Neapolitans first settled in New York, and covering 11 blocks of the Little Italy neighborhood.

The festival begins on Thursday with the blessing of the vendors, and religious ceremonies take place throughout the 11 days. But the event is known for something that many people hold equally sacred: the food.

Zeppoles, cannolis, Italian sausages, meatballs and more abound. It is a party after all.

It’s best to come hungry and prepared to brave the exuberant crowds: according to organizers, the tradition attracts nearly a million people each year.

The famous Grand Procession will take place on Saturday 14 from 2pm to 5pm. A full list of events and performances can be found here.

The Grand Marshall for this year’s event is Chef Anne Burrell, known for hosting Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America.

Many of Little Italy’s main streets will remain closed for much of the week, including portions of Mulberry Street, Grand Street and Hester Street. A full list of closures can be found on the New York City Department of Transportation website.
