Lincoln Project ad features Sam Elliott urging skeptical voters to abandon their prejudices and support Kamala Harris

The voice of Sam Elliott directly combats sexism in voting behavior last advertisement by The Lincoln Project.

In a voiceover peppered with occasional obscenities, the “Tombstone” actor demands that voters put aside their prejudices and show their support for Kamala Harris and became America’s first female president.

“What the hell are you waiting for?” Elliott says. “Because when it comes to the woman thing, it’s time to get over it. It’s time for hope, it’s time for change. It’s time to be a man and vote for a woman.”

The Lincoln Project, founded and led by former Republican political consultants, has built a reputation over more than four years for delivering blunt messages to refute the former president Donald Trumps agenda. With Trump now the Republican presidential nominee for the third time in a row, Elliott delivers a monologue in his famous weathered accent.

“I can’t believe we’re having this conversation again,” he said. “So here we go.”

Elliott specifically spoke out a political ad 2020 produced by the then Democratic candidate Joe Bidens campaign. At the time, Elliott was supporting a candidate with a public profile similar to his own, a white man and a long-recognizable figure who only became a major star later in life.

But now, with Biden step aside Elliott has chosen his vice president as his preferred successor this year rather than seeking another term. He said voters should also be prepared to refocus their support on Harris rather than thinking about a return to the Trump era.

A press release from The Lincoln Project makes clear that producers hope to reach skeptical voters who supported Biden but for whatever reason feel uncomfortable voting for Harris. Elliott’s voiceover suggests that the stakes of the race are too high to let personal biases interfere with rational decision-making.

“You know what’s at stake,” Elliott says. “One candidate promises a divided America full of lies and hate. And one stands for change.”

“Kamala Harris has more courage, more honor, more guts than this man ever had,” Elliott adds, as the footage changes to black-and-white images of Trump.

Elliott delivers commentary that keeps the ad off the air but expresses his anger at the prospect of another Trump presidency.

“You decide, are we really going back to that same damn broken road? Or are we going forward?”
