Liev Schreiber did not protest The Perfect Couple dance like fellow cast members

Liev Schreiber was the only actor who put on his dancing shoes for The perfect couplemusical opening titles.

A flash-mob-style dance sequence, set to Meghan Trainor’s “Criminal,” opens Netflix’s latest star-studded murder mystery from director Susanne Bier. Well, Schreiber told Variety at the show’s Los Angeles premiere this week that all of his co-stars — Nicole Kidman, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy and Eve Hewson — “were rebelling against the idea, except me.”

Fahy told the outlet that the cast had started a WhatsApp group to protest the idea. Schreiber, however, was not part of that chain, he said. “I was already in my trailer practicing the dance moves,” he said. “I just like dancing and I was a little disappointed when it came out that I wasn’t going to be in it anymore because I thought I was doing really well.” (Release the Schreiber version.)

Inspired by the 2018 novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand, The perfect couple stars Kidman and Schreiber as married couple Greer and Tag Winbury, who gather in Nantucket with their families for the wedding of their son Benji (Billy Howle) and future daughter-in-law Amelia (Hewson). The ceremony ends in disaster before it even begins when a body is discovered hours before the wedding, casting suspicion on everyone.

It’s a show about murder, yes, but showrunner Jenna Lamia recently told Netflix’s Tudum that the opening sequence captures the essence of the show perfectly. “Susanne had this brilliant idea that if we used a dance like that as the opening credits, it would immediately tell people that yes, this is a murder mystery, and yes, it’s a thriller, but you’re also going to have a lot of fun, so sit back and enjoy the ride.”

“I think it’s really important that people realize that the tone of the show isn’t The undo, or something Susanne has done before,” Lamia added. “This is a fun murder mystery. Sure, someone dies, but you’re also going to laugh.”

Entertainment weekly Kidman herself spoke at the LA premiere, saying that the first thing that came to her mind when she heard about the musical sequence was a resounding “no.” “And then the director said, ‘You have to do it.’ So I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it as Greer.’ So I hope you noticed I danced as Greer,” Kidman said.

“We were like, ‘There’s no way we’re doing this dance,'” Sam Nivola, who plays Will, one of the Winbury sons, told EW on the red carpet. “‘We need to call our agents! We need to stop this!'” But Bier convinced the cast, who have all since admitted that filming was a blast. “We were all a little nervous about it, but in the end we had such a good time,” Fahy told Tudum.

The perfect couple is now available on Netflix.
