LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Tropicana implosion is just days away, happening Wednesday morning at 2:30 a.m.

After almost seventy years as a star on the Las Vegas Strip, the final preparations are being made to make this icon go down in history.

I spoke to the team behind the implosion to find out how they will bring down the two Tropicana hotel towers.

Debby Lamm has a special bond with the Tropicana and said she isn’t ready to see it go.

I asked her what will be going through her mind when she sees it for the last time and then after it implodes.

“When I see everything completely gone, it will be sad, very sad,” Lamm said.

Lamm’s first trip to Las Vegas was in 1981 with her husband.

“It was our very first place in Vegas and actually our very first vacation,” Lamm said.

Since that day, they stayed at what was once considered the Tiffany of the Strip ten more times, creating lifelong memories.

“Well, my husband passed away a few years ago, so it was all memories of him and I being there together,” Lamm said.

She reminisced about those memories as the end of the Tropicana nears.

“You don’t have a lot of the really older iconic structures anymore, so I realize it’s special in the community. It is truly an honor to be a part of it,” said President and Owner of Controlled Demolition Inc. Mark Loizeaux.

CDI and GGG demolition are the two companies responsible for the implosion. Loizeaux says a lot of preparation went into the moment of destruction.

“In a concrete structure like the club tower, we are dealing with dynamite sticks like you see in the cartoons,” Loizeaux said. “The opposite is true in the steel structure, the Paradise Tower, structural steel. We have phalanges there that are up to three inches thick, we use something called a linear form charge to cut that steel.

Loizeaux tells me they are still making final preparations for the demo, but explosives have already been placed in the hotel towers and protected by black material that can be seen on the outside of the buildings.

Right after the fireworks show, he says the button will be pressed, the explosions will go off and both buildings will fall almost simultaneously.

“And then you start hearing bang bang bang bang, boom boom boom, this structure is going to come, this structure is going to come down and this one is going to be behind it,” Loizeaux said.

Lamm said that while she is sad to see the Tropicana go down in Las Vegas history, she hopes everyone will remember its glory.

“The people who were allowed to stay there, I hope they have fond memories like I do,” Lamm said.
