Lando Norris takes second career win as Max Verstappen struggles

Lando Norris won the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix by a staggering margin of around 20 seconds. Joining the McLaren driver on the podium were Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, who finished second and third respectively.

Round 1: Lando Norris, starting from pole, has a bad start and almost immediately loses the lead to home hero Max Verstappen. George Russell, on the other hand, has a great start and overtakes Oscar Piastri for third position.

Round 3: Lewis Hamilton started from fourteenth place and has now moved up to twelfth as he begins to overtake the drivers on the soft tyres.

Round 4: Max Verstappen is already out of Lando Norris’ DRS range with a lead of 1.5 seconds.

Round 6: Charles Leclerc passes Sergio Perez for fifth position.

Round 8: Kevin Magnussen, after starting from the pit lane, drives into the gravel at turn 1. He manages to avoid a collision with the barriers and continues the race in 19th position.

Round 13: Alex Albon is the first driver to enter the pits. He changes from medium to hard compound tyres. He comes out in twentieth place.

Round 14: Lewis Hamilton is now in the points, having passed Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll for tenth. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen complains over the team radio at Red Bull: “The car is not turning at Turn 10.” Lando Norris, 1.25 seconds behind Verstappen, claims his “pace is strong.”

Round 16: Lando Norris is now within half a second of Max Verstappen. Verstappen tells Red Bull that his “tyres are numb”.

Round 18: Lando Norris takes the lead of the race after overtaking Max Verstappen on the inside of Turn 1.

Round 19: Max Verstappen stays within DRS range of Lando Norris.

Round 20: Lando Norris breaks away and is now out of DRS range of Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver is now 1.5 seconds behind.

Round 23: Pierre Gasly defends his position in eighth place against Lewis Hamilton, who tries to overtake but fails.

Round 25: Charles Leclerc comes in from 5th position and comes out in 9th. Lewis Hamilton also comes in from 9th position and comes out in 15th.

Round 26: George Russell is next in the pits. The Mercedes driver makes a slow stop of 3.4 seconds as the team struggles with the right front tire.

Round 27: Lando Norris continues to extend his lead to six seconds. Max Verstappen comes in from second position and comes out in fifth.

Round 28: In response, Lando Norris pits from the lead but makes a less than ideal stop of 3.1 seconds. He comes out of the blocks fourth, ahead of Max Verstappen.

Round 30: Sergio Perez has a 4.4 second pit stop! He drops to ninth behind Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.

Round 34: Oscar Piastri comes into the pits from the lead of the race, he starts in fifth place, ahead of Sergio Perez. Lando Norris leads with a gap of 7 seconds to Max Verstappen in second place.

Punishment: Lance Stroll is given a 5-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Round 41: A terrible moment for Kevin Magnussen! Alex Albon went for the overtake on the Haas driver for the tenth position and Magnussen lost several positions to Pierre Gasly, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll and is now in 14th place. Gasly also takes the chance to take over the tenth place from Albon.

Round 43: Lando Norris has extended his lead over Max Verstappen to 10 seconds.

Round 45: Max Verstappen reports to Red Bull that he has lost his grip. The gap to Lando Norris is now 11.7 seconds.

Round 46: McLaren tells Lando Norris on team radio: “The gap to Verstappen is 10 seconds. Under the Safety Car we would consider it medium, get behind him and then you would pass him. Happy?”

Norris replies, “Yeah, you might sound a little too confident! I agree with you.”

Round 49: Lewis Hamilton comes in from eighth position to change to a new set of soft tyres. It is a free pit stop as he does not lose any positions with Nico Hulkenberg behind him.

Round 51: Lewis Hamilton sets fastest race lap so far on his new soft tyres.

Round 61: Pierre Gasly takes over ninth position from Nico Hulkenberg.

Round 62: Lando Norris maintains his lead with a stunning 16.9 seconds advantage over Max Verstappen behind him.

Round 64: Fernando Alonso takes over the final points position (tenth place) from Nico Hulkenberg.

Round 68: With five laps to go, Lando Norris leads, followed by Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz.
