Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Suspect Sanjay Roy Tells Court He Wants Lie Detector Test. Lawyer Explains Why

Kolkata suspect tells court he wants lie detector test. Lawyer explains why

Sanjay Roy is the prime suspect in the Kolkata rape and murder case

Calcutta:

The prime accused in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital has stated before a special court that he wanted to undergo a lie detector test so that “the truth would come out”, the accused’s lawyer told NDTV.

A special court in Kolkata yesterday allowed polygraph (lie detector) tests to be conducted on prime suspect Sanjay Roy. The court had already allowed lie detector tests to be conducted on Sandip Ghosh, the former director of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and four other doctors who were on duty on the night the junior doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall of the hospital.

According to Sanjay Roy’s lawyer, he answered “Yes” when the court asked him if he was ready for the lie detector test.

And when the judge asked why he was ready, Sanjay Roy, according to this lawyer, said he was “innocent” and “had been set up.”

“I also want the truth to come out through the lie detector test,” the lawyer said, quoting Sanjay Roy.

The polygraph tests on Sanjay Roy and six others began today, officials said. The polygraph test on Sanjay Roy was conducted in jail, while the rest took the test at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Kolkata, news agency PTI reported.

Sandip Ghosh visited the CBI office in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, for the ninth consecutive day this morning.

Among the participants in the lie detection test were two first-year postgraduate trainees, whose fingerprints were found in the seminar hall. A team of polygraph specialists from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi was flown to Kolkata to conduct the tests.

The CBI told the Supreme Court on Thursday that there was an attempt to cover up the rape and murder of the junior doctor by the police. The CBI said the crime scene had changed by the time the CBI took over the investigation.

The body of the resident physician was found with serious injuries in the seminar hall of the pulmonology department of the hospital on the morning of August 9. Sanjay Roy was arrested the next day.

Investigators have released a CCTV screenshot of Sanjay Roy entering the hospital an hour after midnight, before the woman’s body was found in the morning. The CCTV footage also shows a Bluetooth earphone wrapped around the suspect’s neck. Police had said they recovered Bluetooth earphones from the crime scene during their initial investigation.

The CCTV footage shows Sanjay Roy entering the hospital at 1.03 am, sources said. During interrogation, the police showed him the CCTV evidence after which Sanjay Roy confessed to the crime, sources said.
