Kirby Smart calls out Georgia football fans after beating Auburn

Georgia football fans better watch their game against Mississippi State next Saturday.

Coach Kirby Smart sent a message that he wants more from the home crowd, which he didn’t see or hear in Saturday’s 31-13 win against Auburn.

At his post-game press conference and in comments Fox5 in Atlanta aired after the game with sideline reporter and TV host DJ Shockley, Smart said he wants more.

“To be honest, I’m probably disappointed in our fans for the first time ever,” Fox told Shockley after the game, before an announced sellout of 93,033. “I thought there was a lack of real influence on the audience, in terms of noise, passion and energy. Hey, it was hot, but our players had full pads on, helmets, pads and it’s hot out there. They’re trying to have a home field advantage like we’ve had when we’ve played against teams and I can’t get any crowd noise. That’s frustrating for me. I’ll just be honest about it. I think we have to do better as fans. I know I have to do better as a coach, but we need these fans to support us and these players need them behind them.”

Georgia’s home crowd has impressed in recent years in games against top 15 opponents Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

“We have to make it difficult for other teams to play here,” Smart said at the post-match press conference. ‘But it isn’t. It is no longer the same as in the past. It must be energetic. It must be so.”
