Kim Kardashian visits Menéndez Brothers with Monsters star Cooper Koch

Kim Kardashian and Monsters Actor Cooper Koch reportedly visited Erik and Lyle Menéndez in prison, a day after the former’s brother released a statement through his wife criticizing Ryan Murphy’s new film as an “unfair portrayal.”

According to TMZ, Kardashian, who has positioned herself as a criminal justice advocate and now considers Murphy a colleague since she has appeared in his films, American Horror Story: Delicate — stopped by the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County to speak to a group of about 40 inmates, including the Menéndez brothers, about prison reform.

The reality TV star and business mogul, who will continue her collaboration with Murphy through the upcoming legal drama on Hulu All is fair— set in an all-female law firm and starring Kardashian heavyweights Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, Sarah Paulson, Teyana Taylor and Niecy Nash — was joined by sister Khloé Kardashian and mother Kris Jenner, along with film producer and Anti-Recidivism Coalition founder Scott Budnick. Koch, who plays Erik opposite Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s Lyle, was also in attendance.

One of the topics discussed was Greenspace, a reform strategy aimed at improving prison grounds to promote inmate rehabilitation, led by Lyle and Erik Menéndez.

Monsters: De Lyle and Erik Menéndez Storywhich premiered on Netflix on September 19, is the second installment of Murphy’s true-crime anthology docudrama, which originally premiered two years ago with Evan Peters portraying grizzly serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Season 2 also stars Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as Menéndez’s parents, Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty,” who were murdered by their children in 1989.

Upon its release, Erik condemned the series in a lengthy statement, writing, “I believed we had moved past the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, and had created a caricature of Lyle rooted in the horrible and blatant likes that were rampant on the show. I can only believe they did this on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say I believe Ryan Murphy could not be so naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives to do this without malicious intent.”

The statement continued: “It saddens me to know that Netflix’s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crimes has taken the painful truths several steps backwards – back in time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that men were not sexually abused and that men experienced rape trauma differently than women. Those horrible lies have been disrupted and exposed over the past two decades by countless brave victims who have broken through their personal shame and bravely spoken out. So now Murphy is shaping his horrible story through disgusting and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and me and disheartening smears.”

In closing his remarks, Erik said, “Isn’t the truth enough? Let the truth be the truth. How demoralizing to know that one man with power can undermine decades of progress in illuminating childhood trauma.” As noted in the statement, Erik took issue with the show’s lack of engagement with the abuse that colored much of his and his brother’s lives at the hands of their parents, including sexual trauma from their father, which they cited as context for the murder committed out of fear.

After being arrested in 1990 following Erik’s confession to his psychologist, the two brothers were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, their attorney Mark Geragos recently said People He is “cautiously optimistic” that new testimony from the family will help reduce the case to voluntary manslaughter.

The backlash to Murphy’s latest Sample joining is somewhat unsurprising. Upon the release of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, The creator and Netflix faced backlash, with the families of victims coming forward saying the series had “retraumatized” them and that they had not been contacted prior to its release. At the time, the show became the third series on the streamer to surpass 1 billion hours watched in 60 days, prompting the platform to renew the show for two more seasons.

There is talk online about the ethics of Roofhave resurfaced following Erik’s statement and the topic is trending on X as some viewers announce they will not be watching the new episode.
