Kane passes Rooney as records fall in Bayern Munich defeat

MUNICH — Harry Kane scored four goals on Tuesday to take his total goal tally in the Champions League to 34, breaking the previous record of 30 held by Wayne Rooney, the player with the most goals by an English player in the competition.

It was all part of a record night for the striker and Bayern Munich, who beat Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in the first round of the new Champions League format.

Bayern’s nine goals were also the most ever in a Champions League match, while Kane also held a European record, with three of his goals coming from the penalty spot.

Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot to give Bayern the lead and equal Rooney’s tally for an Englishman. He scored his 31st on a rebound to pass Rooney and added two more from the penalty spot to take his Champions League tally to 12 goals since moving to Bayern a year ago.

Raphael Guerrero, Michael Olise, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka scored the most goals for Bayern, resulting in a record nine goals in a single Champions League match. Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara both scored, allowing the visitors to score.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has now scored 53 goals in 50 games in all competitions since joining Bayern. He has scored nine goals in his last three games for club and country, including two for England against Finland in his 100th cap and a hat-trick for Bayern on Saturday against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.

Another record was broken when Thomas Müller made his 152nd Champions League appearance for Bayern from the bench, the most for a player from one club, breaking a tie with former Barcelona man Xavi Hernandez.
