Joel Klatt Shakes Up College Football Top 10 Team Rankings After Week 1

Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt has shaken up his top 10 team rankings after the first week of college football, including a new #1 team!

There were some eye-openers and some you probably already knew were coming, but there is still a picture of the best teams in the country, albeit early.

Let’s take a look at Klatt’s top 10 team rankings after the first full week of college football.

The Bulldogs defeated Clemson in a neutral-site game to rise to the top of Klatt’s rankings after Week 1. It was a close game at first, but then Georgia’s offense came to life.

The defense did its thing all game long and that led to far more criticism of Clemson than props to Georgia. But let’s give the Bulldogs their flowers too. They’re the best team in college football.

Ohio State didn’t do anything to keep Klatt from being the No. 1 team in his personal rankings, it’s just that Georgia’s performance stood out. Ohio State got its act together and looked like the best team in the Big Ten.

Will Howard was solid, Jeremiah Smith is already a top player and the defense was suffocating. We keep saying it: national title or flop.

The Longhorns picked up where they left off and looked pretty dominant. Colorado State didn’t stand a chance.

Sure, Texas fell short in the College Football Playoff last year, but maybe this season will be different, even in the SEC. Quinn Ewers had a fast night at the office and this is easily one of the best teams in the country.

Notre Dame went to Kyle Field and defeated Texas A&M for one of the biggest wins of Marcus Freeman’s young career, skyrocketing in Klatt’s rankings.

With an elite offensive line and a suffocating defense, Notre Dame is going to be a tough opponent for anyone in the country. How the 2024 season unfolds for the Fighting Irish should be fascinating.

Alabama also played a near flawless game last weekend and suddenly fans forgot about Nick Saban. Just kidding.

Klatt thinks the Crimson Tide is a top five team because the standard hasn’t changed from Saban to Kalen DeBoer. If that’s the case overall, good luck keeping this team out of the playoffs.

Miami rose up everyone’s rankings, it seemed, with a dominant performance in Gainesville. The Gators didn’t stand a chance.

The biggest eye-popping player was Cam Ward, who seamlessly took over the QB position for Miami and looked dangerous. If that’s the type of Ward you get all season, this is one of the best teams in the country.

The Rebels decimated Furman, we actually feel bad. Nevertheless, after one week at least, it looks like Jaxson Dart can win the Heisman Trophy.

Whether Ole Miss can maintain its dominance and be Lane Kiffin’s best team ever remains to be seen. But for now, this team is a factor in the College Football Playoff standings.

The Nittany Lions shook off a sluggish start to run past West Virginia in the second half Saturday and sit firmly in Klatt’s top 10 rankings.

Now it’s up to Penn State to stay consistent. Is this really a Big Ten contender? Or just another second-tier team on the outside. Right now, it looks like the former.

Klatt compared this team to an early version of Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverine teams. It may not be pretty, but this team could be better than expected.

Sherrone Moore waited until kickoff to announce Davis Warren as the starting quarterback, and that will likely be the biggest question of the entire season. Still, the offense is talented and the defense is still loaded. Watch out.

The Ducks had a really tough time with Idaho, which came as a surprise to almost everyone, but they are still one of the most talented teams in the country.

The defense will be tested, but has great potential to be one of the better units. Let’s not forget that Dillon Gabriel is considered one of the better quarterbacks in the country and he can certainly figure it out.

Sure, Klatt’s rankings changed after a week and they will definitely change again after week 2. Just wait for the surprises!
