Under intense scrutiny, mainly since he took over as Jets offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett remains in place afterwards Robert Salehdeposition on Tuesday morning. The Jets have no plans to beat the embattled OC, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Given Hackett’s ties to Aaron Rodgersthis is not surprising. However, the Jets have made some interesting attempts to curb Hackett’s power, after attempting to hire an assistant that would limit the ex-Packers OC’s reach in the building. That plan didn’t pan out and Hackett calls the Jets on for a second straight season.

That said, Hackett’s survival may have surprised some in the organization. Rather than Saleh risking losing his job after London, SNY’s Connor Hughes notes that some suspect Hackett is closer to the chopping block. Jets front office officials have scrutinized Hackett’s work lately, Hughes added.

Hackett is no stranger to mid-season sacks. The Jaguars removed him from his OC post during the 2018 season. Even more memorably, the Broncos made him one of the few first-year HCs in NFL history to be fired before his freshman season ended. Hackett’s disastrous stint in Denver lasted all 15 games. However, the Jets hired him to call plays soon after. The move certainly had an impact on the team that took over Rodgers, who was nearing retirement at the time Hackett signed on to call Jets plays.

Aside from the investigation, Hackett has the backing of Rodgers, effectively an organizational power broker given his importance to this Jets regime’s chances of surviving beyond 2024. The only opportunity that presents itself is as an interim HC Jeff Ulbrich leads to a turnaround. Hackett’s bond with Rodgers, stemming from three seasons as a non-play-calling Green Bay OC, has proven strong enough to stabilize the second-generation NFL coach’s career — at least to some extent.
