    Jessica Pegula defeats No. 1 Swiatek to advance to US Open

    Buffalo’s Jessica Pegula will reach her first Grand Slam semifinal on Thursday after beating No. 1 Iga Swiatek in three sets at the US Open on Wednesday.

    Pegula, who is ranked sixth, has yet to drop a set at the tournament ahead of her semi-final against Karolina Muchova on Thursday, September 5.

    “The relief was palpable on Wednesday night when Jessica Pegula finally reached a Grand Slam semifinal at the seventh attempt,” the US Open Day 11 preview read. “The 6-2, 6-4 authoritative dismissal of world No. 1 Iga Swiatek said it all: Pegula has been on a roll these past two weeks and will be tough to stop.”

    If she wins Thursday’s match, she will face either No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka or No. 13 Emma Navarro in Saturday’s final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

    DirecTV customers may not be able to access contests

    For 11 million DirecTV subscribers, many channels were blacked out on Sunday, as the current five-year contract between DirecTV and Disney to keep Disney content on DirecTV’s satellite and streaming services, including U-Verse TV, expired on Sunday, Sept. 1. Talks reached an impasse and DirecTV blacked out all of its Disney channels.

    Without a new contract, DirecTV viewers may miss ESPN’s broadcast of the US Open tennis championship next week.

    “The US Open tennis tournament will be streamed live on ESPN+,” a DirecTV spokesperson said Tuesday. “Disney normally streams the same action live on ESPN.com and its ESPN app, but Disney has shut down that access as well. It is in the process of removing all consumer access to its network-specific websites and apps in order to drive more consumers to its streaming video services such as ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu.”
