James Cook’s three-touchdown homecoming is the highlight of the Bills’ win over the Dolphins on Thursday

While the goal-line tally likely ranked third on the highlight reel, it could be the most impactful going forward. With just four rushing TDs in his first 34 games, Cook hasn’t had many goal-line carries. That could change.

“It seems like every week he’s getting more comfortable and more confident,” Allen said. “He was begging for some goal-line runs and we gave it to him, and he scored his touchdown there.”

The 24-year-old Cook believes he has earned the trust of offensive coordinator Joe Brady and co. in short-yardage situations and he could look back on his performance after the game with a big smile on his face.

“As you saw today, if they trust me, I’m going to get the ball in the end zone,” Cook said.

Overall, the game was a reminder that the rising back is a versatile threat, recording 78 yards rushing on just 11 carries, averaging 7.1 yards per tote, along with his one catch for a TD.

Cook has blossomed since Brady took over last season and has become not only a complement to Allen but a focal point of the offense.

According to his coach, Cook’s 2023 season is impressive, as he ran for 1,122 rushing yards.

“James continues to grow and get better,” McDermott said.

It was a performance that was all the more significant for Cook because it came in Miami, where he grew up but struggled as a pro. In his two previous games away against the Fins, Cook had just 13 carries for 32 total yards. Then came Thursday and a three-TD homecoming.

“He’s from here and I know it was important for him to play well,” McDermott said. “He just keeps growing and developing. I’m just incredibly proud of him.”
