As Ja’Marr Chase negotiates his contract with the Bengals, rumor has it that he’d like to take a deal a penny more than the record-breaking deal his friend and former college teammate Justin Jefferson received from the Vikings earlier this year.

Chase denied that notion during a call with the media on Friday.

“If I want to beat Justin, I want to Justin beat up,” Chase said, via Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer, drawing laughter from the assembled media. “Not a dime, bro.”

But that doesn’t mean Chase is looking to reset the market in some bizarre way.

“I don’t really want to go much higher,” Chase said. “It’s not really that I’m trying to beat him, I’m trying to go crazy. It’s just what’s right.

“There is a long lifespan.”

Chase said he thinks the two sides “fairly close“to reach a deal, but he wants to end negotiations on Sunday. Chase said it will likely be a game-time decision whether he will play if there is no agreement.
