Jackson Arnold Benched, Oklahoma Brings in Michael Hawkins at QB vs. Tennessee

Oklahoma made a quick quarterback change on Saturday night, bringing in true freshmen Michael Hawkins in the match against Tennessee and apparently put the starter on the bench Jackson Arnold for now. Tennessee leads 19-3 at the time of the substitution, just before halftime.

Arnold struggled in the first half Saturday night, including three turnovers, two of which were particularly ugly. He was 7 of 16 for 54 yards and an interception, plus two fumbles while on the bench.

Hawkins led a run just before halftime, but the Sooners quickly gave up.

The final straw appeared to be a backwards pass that Arnold left short of his receiver with a few minutes left in the second quarter, when the Volunteers recovered the fumble and scored. It was Jackson’s third turnover in less than 30 minutes.

In the first quarter, Arnold threw his interception in an attempt to reach a deep corner route, but instead found double coverage and a Tennessee defender. A few minutes later, just after Oklahoma forced and recovered a Tennessee fumble, Arnold fumbled himself to give the ball right back.

Then came his third turnover, which was the last straw.
