‘Inventing Anna’ con artist Anna Sorokin has uninspiring debut on ‘Dancing with the Stars’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Convicted con artist Anna Sorokin hit the dance floor on “Dancing With the Stars” wearing a lightweight — and very sparkly — ankle bracelet.

The so-called “fake heiress,” who was convicted in 2019 of defrauding banks, hotels and friends after building a false reputation as a wealthy German heiress named Anna Delvey, debuted the ballroom-worthy ankle bracelet during the premiere of the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” Tuesday night.

“It’s actually not a big deal. It’s quite light and I asked them to tighten it so it doesn’t dangle. So it’s not that big of a deal,” she told The Associated Press after the premiere. She and dance pro Ezra Sosa performed a routine to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.”

“It’s the real star of the show, let’s be honest,” Sosa said of Sorokin’s bejeweled anklet.

“I think it’s funny how people like it — it’s not like an ankle weight,” Sosa said. “It’s not like 20 pounds. It’s literally less than a pound and it’s not a big deal.”

Sorokin admitted that her debut did not go as planned.

“I’m relieved it’s over,” she said. “I feel like my dancing could have been a little bit better, but I’m glad I did it and it was a great experience.”

Sorokin said she hopes viewers will forgive her somewhat, despite her criminal past.

“Hopefully people will give me, give me a chance to show what I can do. And I’ve done my time and paid back my damages,” she said.

Initial fan reviews were not positive, with the phrase “Anna Delvey’s flawed DWTS debut” trending as a topic on social media site X.

Though she was released from prison in February 2021, she was detained by immigration authorities shortly after her release, claiming she had overstayed her visa and needed to return to her native Germany. The inspiration for “Inventing Anna” spent more than a year in ICE custody before a judge granted her the option of being transferred to home confinement in October 2022 while she fights deportation.

Her release conditions had to be modified so she could travel from New York to Los Angeles for filming.
