Dials monitored the reaction of a Fox News focus group during Tuesday’s presidential debate and found that independent voters and Republicans supported former President Trump’s immigration policies.

Trump took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris during the presidential debate on ABC News, accusing the Biden and Harris administration of “destroying the fabric of our country” with the influx of illegal immigration.

The former president blamed the administration for the rise in “immigrant crime,” a sentiment that apparently resonated not only with Republicans but also with a large number of independent respondents.

The focus group consisted of seven Democrats, five independents, and five Republicans, represented by blue, yellow, and red lines, respectively. When Trump spoke about rising crime by illegal immigrants, the yellow line that monitored independent response rose dramatically in Trump’s favor, overlapping with the red Republican line.

Lee Carter, pollster and president of Maslansky + Partners, said she was shocked that independent voters followed Republicans so closely on this issue.

“I was really, really surprised because the intensity of independent support for Donald Trump was there and I didn’t expect that,” Carter said Wednesday on “The Faulkner Focus.”

“Independents are very similar to Republicans. They’re looking for a couple of things. They’re looking for answers on immigration, they’re looking for answers on the economy. They want to hear that things are going to get better, and they also want change from what’s happening,” Carter continued. “One of the biggest things they were looking for last night from Kamala Harris is how are you going to make this different?”

An independent voter from New York who participated in a voter panel on Wednesday told host Harris Faulkner, “You don’t have to look beyond the five boroughs to see the impact of the migrant crisis.”

“When Kamala was asked directly by the moderators, she made no effort at all to defend the administration’s policy. She can’t,” he added. “It’s indefensible, so she turned around … but they completely rewrote Trump’s immigration policy in the first year. I would have liked to see an explanation to the country as to why they did that.”

Carter went on to point to additional examples, including fracking, abortion and the economy, with independents following Republican responses.

Faulkner said the results show the GOP “needs to pay better attention” to unaffiliated voters.

“I think independents are following Trump’s responses in the same way because it’s clear what’s happening in these cities across the country,” said one GOP voter from New Jersey.

“Every day we see destruction…crime…every day our safety is being compromised, and I don’t think you can hide from that. I think it’s becoming more and more apparent and something has to change.”

Independent voters were dissatisfied with Trump when he spoke about the coronavirus pandemic, but both Democrats and Republicans were consistently more positive about the former president when he spoke about the pandemic and the economy.

However, all three voting blocs shot up support for Trump when he said he was going to “cut taxes dramatically and create a great economy, like I’ve done before.”
