Hurricane force winds, heavy rain and hail possible in southeastern Wyoming

According to the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service, wind gusts of 75 mph are possible today in southeastern Wyoming, especially around Interstate 25 and eastward.

There is also the possibility of a derecho for the first time in four years.

The agency issued a special weather statement Tuesday morning, which said:

  • A severe wind threat is expected today. Mainly east of I-25 into western Nebraska. A line of strong to severe storms will form along the cold front moving through the region today. The biggest concern with this line will be strong, damaging winds, with gusts in excess of 70-80 MPH possible in the strongest storms. An isolated gust could reach 85 mph in the Nebraska Panhandle this afternoon/evening.
  • A derecho is expected to form along an advancing strong cold front moving across southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska this afternoon and evening. Increased risk for severe weather has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for parts of western Nebraska. A Marginal and light risk are also still present in other areas of southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

The agency posted the following on its website:

A strong weather system that is unusual for this late season in terms of severe weather is expected to move through the area today, along with a strong cold front. This front is expected to produce a line of strong to severe thunderstorms that will move east-northeast across the high plains through Tuesday evening. 🚨🚨🚨 The weather forecast is positive as this event will be a potential derecho, which we have not had in our area since June 6, 2020. This is a day to stay weather aware as the thunderstorms have the potential to produce significant wind gusts of up to or above 65 knots/75 mph. 🌬️While brief but heavy rainfall and small hail are expected with this line of storms, the primary concern will be damaging winds with gusts potentially exceeding 70 MPH. Areas in the Nebraska Panhandle highlighted in the oval have the greatest chance of seeing the strongest wind gusts later today. ☈ Thunderstorms will begin in Carbon and Albany Counties this morning and at noon, eventually moving into the I-25 corridor between 2 and 6 this afternoon. Areas in the Nebraska Panhandle can expect the severe thunderstorms to occur between 5 and 8 p.m.
