The 2024 Leagues Cup Final will be a rematch of the 2023 MLS Cup.

Reigning MLS champions Columbus Crew host Los Angeles FC at Lower.com Field for another important match between these two clubs.

That these two teams are in the Leagues Cup final is no surprise. In the run-up to the tournament, the Crew and LAFC were considered Major League Soccer’s top contenders to lift the Leagues Cup trophy.

Los Angeles FC enters the knockout rounds with a boat race against its opponents. LAFC has won its four knockout round matches by a combined score of 13-1, and easily defeated the Colorado Rapids 4-0 in Wednesday’s semifinal.

The Columbus Crew, however, appear to have LAFC’s number. In addition to last season’s MLS Cup win, the Crew crushed LAFC 5-1 on July 15 at BMO Stadium. It is LAFC’s only home loss in 2024. The Crew — who have lost just once at home — defeated the Philadelphia Union in the Leagues Cup semifinals.

With their semi-final victory, both the Crew and LAFC have qualified for next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup.

When is the Leagues Cup final between Columbus Crew and LAFC?

What is Leagues Cup?

North America’s two major professional soccer leagues are pausing their regular season competitions for a month to compete in a World Cup-style tournament.

Previously an eight-team tournament, the Leagues Cup has evolved into a 47-team competition in 2023, featuring all Major League Soccer and Liga MX clubs. Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami CF won the inaugural edition of the expanded competition.

Last year, 47 teams participated in the tournament, in which all clubs from the MLS and Liga MX participated. The Leagues Cup has been held twice before (2019 and 2021) with a limited participation.

The 29 MLS and 18 Liga MX clubs were divided into 15 groups in two regions: East and West. The group stage began on July 26 and lasted until August 6. The top two teams from each group advanced to the single-elimination knockout rounds, which began on August 7. The championship game will be held on August 25.
