Heat and humidity plus chance of storms at the start of the week

The latest weather forecast for Northeast Wisconsin from Storm Team 5…

The heat has arrived here today with highs in the mid to upper 80s, even 90 in Waupaca this afternoon and it definitely felt muggy with dew points in the low 70s. Tonight I am expecting lows in the upper 60s to low 70s with mostly cloudy skies. A weakening warm front is moving north and could bring an isolated shower tonight but most will stay dry.

The next two days are important to stay informed about the weather for two reasons. Monday looks like it will be partly cloudy to mostly sunny, but it will be a very warm day. Air temperatures will be in the upper 80s and low 90s, accompanied by tropical dew points in the low to mid 70s, heat index or wind chill temperatures reaching the upper 90s to low and mid triple digits.

In anticipation of the dangerous heat we will experience Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service has issued multiple heat warnings from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, with heat index values ranging from 100-107 degrees. The potential for thunderstorms on Tuesday could keep the wind chill low, so we’ll be watching to see if more warnings are issued for Tuesday. It’s important to drink plenty of water, check on neighbors and family members, and seek shade if you must go outside. It’s going to be a very hot day for the first day of school in Green Bay.

Which brings me to my next point… the potential for thunderstorms earlier this week. I opted to stay dry on Monday as it looks like there is a strong lid on the atmosphere that is holding back thunderstorms. If we do see anything developing it will be in the evening in the far north, but I don’t expect it to be a widespread scenario in the evening.

After this point, models struggle to come to a definitive conclusion on how the forecast for Monday night through Tuesday will play out in terms of storm coverage and timing, so this remains a fluid situation. At this point, a trough of low pressure is expected to swing through Monday night through Tuesday morning, bringing with it the potential for widespread thunderstorms that could impact the second day of school for the Green Bay area.

We should clear out by late Tuesday morning before another round of thunderstorms hits the area in the afternoon and evening, tapering off overnight. Coverage for this round is questionable, we’ll have to wait and see. Both rounds are capable of strong winds, large hail, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. Cooler weather returns Wednesday before more rain and a few storms move in Thursday through Friday. Labor Day weekend is looking great!
