The 2024 Emmys ended with a bang when the HBO series Tricks shocked the TV world and took home the award for best comedy series. While The Bear he was expected to be the frontrunner this year, Tricks took home the award, its third of the night, and also won Best Screenplay and Best Actress, which went to Jean Smart.

During his acceptance speech, series co-creator Paul W. Downs asked the industry to not only support shows where the lead is 60+, but also to create more shows centered on it.

“When we pitched this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we didn’t know if we were going to sell and we have to thank everyone who helped make this show happen,” Downs said. “About 20 percent of our population is over 60 and only three percent of the characters on television are 60 and I’d love to see more of them because even though I’m a great young supporting character, I’d love to be a great old lead.”

Although the series has won Emmys for best, this is its first for best comedy. Other nominees for the award included ABC’s Abbott Elementary School, FX’s The Bear, Reserve Dogs And What We do in the shadeHulu’s Only murders in the buildingsHBO’s Curb your enthusiasm and Apple’s Royal palm.

As the speech drew to a close, co-creator Lucia Aniello asked viewers to continue supporting the comedy and the comedians’ performances on stages large and small.

“Comedy is really important to us, but we think it can bridge the gap if you laugh at someone. So please support comedy and your local comedians,” Aniello said.
