Guillermo del Toro live tweets about his fight with a ghost in a haunted hotel in Scotland

The biggest social media feud today has nothing to do with video games, politics, or anything else of the usual sort. Instead, it’s between Guillermo del Toro and… a ghost?

It may sound crazy, but the Oscar-winning filmmaker has indeed caused something of a viral moment by live-tweeting his paranormal updates while staying in the “most haunted” room in an old hotel in Aberdeen, Scotland, where he’s currently filming a new movie based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Del Toro first wrote that he would be staying in the room on Tuesday, after one of his producers apparently left him over fears of “strange electrical & physical events.”

For what it’s worth, del Toro added that he had “high hopes” that he would have some sort of supernatural experience in the room. Based on his later updates, it appears his wish came true.

In an update last night, del Toro wrote that while nothing supernatural has happened yet, the atmosphere in the room is “oppressive” and he would have to sleep in another room to get enough rest. “I stop there early and late in the day – but there is something in that room with me,” del Toro wrote. Ominous!

He promised at least one or two more updates on the situation, especially considering how concerned fans were at this point. “Please go away! I’m scared for you and I don’t even know you Guillermo,” one fan replied on X/Twitter. “This is stressing me out.”

One fan simply asked, “Are you being teased, bro?”

Fortunately, as promised, del Toro has continued to post updates, and continues to post them while I’m writing this story. One came about an hour ago, when the director of The Shape of Water wrote that he was done filming for the day and was on his way to the room for dinner.

“If anything happens I’ll update,” he wrote. “There’s more to the room than just vibes, there’s something angry and territorial. A hint of anger.”

His most recent update came just minutes before this story published, in which he said he was “trying to get an EVP on my iPhone.” For those less versed in things like paranormal investigation, del Toro is likely trying to get what in the ghosthunting community is called an electronic voice phenomena (EVP) event, electronic recordings said to pick up the voices of spirits.

It’s no surprise that the Internet is captivated by the whole situation.

“The most fascinating film out there right now isn’t even in theaters yet. It’s watching Guillermo del Toro live-tweet about filming his spooky movie,” wrote Mike Isaac, a tech reporter at the New York Times.

Because this is—and I say this without any irony—a developing story, we’ll be monitoring del Toro’s updates and adding them here. Stay safe out there, GDT.

Del Toro’s long-awaited Frankenstein film has finally come together in recent years, with Euphoria and Saltburn star Jacob Elordi recently cast as The Monster (replacing Andrew Garfield, who left due to scheduling issues). Oscar Isaac also stars as Victor Frankenstein, alongside Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz.
