Ground game leads Dolphins to 15-10 win over New England Patriots

Led by the running back duo of rookie Jaylen Wright and Raheem Mostert, the Miami Dolphins rushed for 193 yards in their 15-10 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.

Wright had his most productive day as a pro, rushing for a career-high 86 yards on 13 carries (6.6 avg.). Running back Raheem Mostert also played a crucial role in pacing Miami’s rushing attack, recording 19 carries for 80 yards (4.2 average) in his first appearance since Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Dolphins’ front seven wreaked havoc on the Patriots’ offensive line with a total of nine quarterback hits. Defensive tackle Zach Sieler led the charge, totaling three quarterback hits and a sack, while defensive tackle Calais Campbell recorded two quarterback hits. Linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah also played in New England’s backfield, posting four tackles and a sack.

Quarterback Tyler Huntley made his second start with the Dolphins and completed 18 of 31 passes for 194 yards and an interception. He also ran for seven yards on three carries.

Huntley led Miami to points on the game’s opening possession. An 18-yard pass to wide receiver Tyreek Hill and a pair of completions to tight end Jonnu Smith were key to the eight-play, 38-yard drive that led to a 54-yard field goal by kicker Jason Sanders – his third field goal in his career. More than 50 meters this season.

Sacks by Ogbah and Sieler forced a Patriots three-and-out, but an interception by cornerback Christian Gonzalez on a Huntley pass intended for Hill put New England in Miami territory. Four plays later, running back Rhamondre Stevenson followed his blockers for a 33-yard touchdown run that gave the Patriots a 7–3 lead with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter.

Miami’s next possession resulted in a missed 41-yard field goal, but the Dolphins defense forced a three-and-out, causing New England to punt with 12:54 left in the second quarter.

After a blocked punt, New England took over at the Miami 23-yard line. Miami’s defense held firm and forced Patriots kicker Joey Slye into a 33-yard field goal, which he missed wide right.

With less than a minute left in the half, wide receiver Braxton Berrios returned a punt 12 yards to the New England 44-yard line. A 16-yard completion to Smith put the Dolphins just outside the red zone with a chance to put points on the board, but a fumble on a 51-yard field goal attempt left Miami trailing 7–3 at halftime.

Both teams traded field goals on their opening drive of the second half. Miami’s eight-play scoring drive featured a pair of Patriots penalties and a 12-yard run by rookie running back Jaylen Wright, which was capped by a 32-yard Sanders field goal.

After another New England three-and-out, the Dolphins continued to chip away at the Patriots’ lead as Sanders drilled a 47-yard field goal to bring Miami within one point with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Dolphins regained the lead late in the fourth quarter when their ground game paved the way for a 15-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:36 of playing time. Fullback Alec Ingold had what would become the decisive score on a three-yard run up the middle.

New England had two more chances to answer, but came up short in Dolphins territory on both occasions, one resulting in a fourth-down stop and the other as time expired.

Hill led all players with 69 receiving yards on six receptions. Smith had a season-high 62 yards on five catches, and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle caught four passes for 46 yards.

Safety Marcus Maye posted a season-high nine tackles and a pass deflection, while linebacker Jordyn Brooks totaled seven tackles and cornerback Jalen Ramsey added five tackles and two passes defensed.

The Dolphins now enter their bye week and return to action in Week 7 in a road game with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, October 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET and will be broadcast live on FOX.
