Great Angelique Kerber continues career with stunning win over Leylah Fernandez

The flame in Angelique Kerber’s career will not go out as the former world number 1 reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by beating Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in three sets.

Kerber has had many great wins in recent matches against Jaqueline Cristian and first Naomi Osaka and has now ended the streak of the well-performing Canadian.

Fernandez was the driving force behind Canadian hopes as Bianca Andreescu was forced out of yesterday’s tournament with an injury, losing to Donna Vekic, who is currently facing Coco Gauff.

But for Kerber, her remarkable run continues, a result that will surely cheer the German fans in the crowd who all chanted her name yesterday when she defeated Cristian.

It was a much easier win compared to yesterday with a third set forced in her last tie. Although this time it was an easier straight sets result for Kerber. She now faces the winner of Emma Navarro and Qinwen Zheng with the former a set up so far and looks set to advance.

The first set saw Kerber and Fernandez trade breaks with Kerber taking the crucial break to make it 4-3. This allowed her to easily win the opening set 6-4. The second set was a close margin as Kerber won it comfortably on paper.

But in reality all games were fairly close and a break at 4-1 was the damage for Kerber. She immediately lost her serve again, but Fernandez was broken again as Kerber easily swept to victory.

What a fairytale it would be if Kerber ended her career with an Olympic victory or at least a medal.

The dream continues! 😎 Kerber’s retirement plans are put on hold again after she beats Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3.
