Giannis Antetokounmpo, Greece remains without victory at Paris Olympics

Greece’s hopes of reaching the knockout round of the men’s basketball at the Paris Olympics suffered a major blow on Tuesday when it lost 84-77 to Spain.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 11 rebounds for Greece, which finished 0-2 in Group A.

After losing their opening games on Saturday, Greece and Spain were essentially playing for their tournament lives. The loser would need to win on Friday, and probably get a lot of help, to have a chance of advancing.

Greece takes on Australia in its last chance to clinch a win before the field is reduced to eight teams. Antetokounmpo, the two-time NBA MVP and eight-time All-Star for the Milwaukee Bucks, has 61 combined points on 67.6% shooting in Greece’s two losses.

Memphis Grizzlies forward Santi Aldama had 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Sergio Llull scored 13 points for Spain, which was tied 1-1 with Canada with one group stage game remaining.

After Greece had reduced a 14-point halftime deficit to a single point early in the fourth quarter, Antetokounmpo tied the game with a convincing left-foot dunk over Aldama (71-71).

But Spain recovered in the following minutes and scored the next eight points.

“It’s tough to make the defensive play with a guy like him,” Aldama said. “You can make the defensive play or you can try to block the shot. … I tried, got (posterized), but next play.”

Greece pulled back to 80-77 with 59 seconds left, but Antetokounmpo scored a three-pointer from the rim.

Antetokounmpo set the tone for his team early by getting to the rim multiple times, including a putback dunk over Usman Garuba.

Aldama did the same for Spain, leading all scorers with 10 points in the first quarter. He also got support from his teammates during a 13-3 run to end the second quarter, giving Spain a 49-35 lead at halftime.

Spain are facing major health problems after Rudy Fernandez was forced off the court in the final quarter following a collision under the basket and was helped to the locker room by trainers.
