Unpacking all the good, bad and worse from the Dawgs’ devastating loss to Alabama on the road.

The Georgia Bulldogs’ regular season winning streak ended last night as the Dawgs pulled off a miraculous comeback in Tuscaloosa. With so much to say about one of the most exciting games of the season, here are the good, bad and ugly takeaways from last night’s defeat.

Moral victories have no place in college football, and last night’s loss will stick around for a while. But if you told Georgia fans at halftime that a 23-point deficit on the road would be overcome and Georgia would ultimately maintain a lead in the game late in the fourth quarter, no one would believe you. Yes, it’s disastrous to see the number four team in the country score 28 points at home, and that’s why the Dawgs lost. But the heart, poise and determination this Georgia team showed on the road should make Georgia fans feel good about their team’s progress. Especially in post-season games, when the road environment is unlikely to be a factor.

Coming into the game, Jalen Milroe was listed as the “X Factor” for Alabama, and Kirby Smart and his staff put a lot of emphasis on how important it was to stop him all week. It’s safe to say the Dawgs fell short of that goal, as Milroe completed 27 of his 33 passes for 374 yards and rushed for another 117 on the ground. While the Dawgs’ defense certainly hindered Bama’s offensive attack much better in the second half, Milroe’s effectiveness was fairly consistent throughout the evening and his performance against the Dawgs was nothing short of spectacular.

Mental mistakes, lost turnovers, missed opportunities on attack, failed actions on defense and basically everything you can think of. The first thirty minutes of last night’s game were by far some of the worst football any Georgia team has shown under Kirby Smart. If the Bulldogs had made just one or two less crucial mistakes in the first half, the hole the Dawgs had to dig themselves out of in the second half could have been a little smaller and last night’s game could have ended very differently.

It’s been a while since Georgia has lost a regular season game, and the fallout from the loss is certainly being felt by Dawg fans across the country. But there’s a lot to learn from this loss, and the Dawgs’ national title and playoff hopes are still very much alive. The Dawgs return to Athens next week to host the Auburn Tigers.
