Geno Smith’s career night wasn’t good enough after the Seattle Seahawks loss

Geno Smith probably wishes he could play all his road games at Ford Field.

Smith produced another sparkling performance against the Detroit Lions on Monday night. He had the best game of his career in the 42-29 rout of the Seahawks.

Simply put, Smith was sensational. He completed 38 of 56 passing for 395 yards (all career-highs) with one touchdown and an interception in garbage time. Many of his completions came under heavy pressure from the Lions – the Lions recorded nine quarterback hits and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was credited with 10 pressures.

Smith had to use his legs to scramble away from the pressure and extend the play against the aggressive Lions pass rush. He stayed poised and made some accurate throws along the way after escaping the initial rush.

“I thought he was done, thought he was accurate. I thought he had a great game,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald told reporters after the game. “I don’t know what the statistics are, but I thought he played very well.”

Smith’s performance against the Lions should not have come as a surprise to anyone who has done any research. Smith has been phenomenal against the Lions the past three seasons.

Last year, Smith completed 32 of 41 passes for 328 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions with a passer rating of 116.3 in the Seahawks’ 37-31 win at Detroit in Week 2. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 320 yards . yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions with a 132.6 rating in a 48-45 win during the 2022 Week 4 win at Detroit.

Smith has completed 93 of 127 passes for 1,043 yards, with five touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown and one late-game interception in three trips to one of the loudest domed stadiums in the NFL.

“I think it tests your will and communication. It’s super loud. I feel like I’m yelling in the huddle just to get the play out, and then at the scrimmage, inflection, making sure all the guys can hear me and then it’s something about those environments that you just kind of recharge, It just makes you want to get out there and perform and we’re really looking forward to every opportunity, but especially those great road games in environments like Detroit,” Smith told reporters last week .

The only change from the first two games? Smith and the Seahawks lost their first game of the season, but Smith is far from discouraged.

‘We’re three and one, that’s what it says, and now we have to move on to the next one. That’s just football, that’s NFL football,” Smith told reporters after the game. “I think the only team that went undefeated was the ’72 Dolphins, so we’re just trying to go out there and win every game we can. We couldn’t get it done today, but that’s why we have next week, so we’re going to improve and get back to it and get ready for next week.”
