While most dance With the Stars guest judges take it easy with the participants, KISS singer and bassist Gene Simmons scored shockingly low scores on Hair Metal Night.

Simmons, 75, started off quite generously during the Tuesday, October 8, episode, giving the evening’s first performers: Danny Amendola and partner Witney Carsona nine, while the other jury members gave the duo sevens. He tried to give Brooks Nader And Gleb Savchenko the first 10 of the season, but he already had a nine, so the score did not count.

As the evening progressed, however, Simmons surprised some performers with his low scores. After Jen Tran earning eights from the other three judges, Simmons said “Don’t hate me” before giving her a seven.

The rock musician then continued to give Phaedra Parks a five, while the other judges all gave her sevens. The crowd booed as Parks, 50, and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiymade disbelieving faces. Chandler Kinney covered her mouth in shock before saying, “What’s going on?” Even cohost Julianne Hough couldn’t hide her disbelief.

“It’s a wild night tonight,” the 36-year-old Hough said with a shrug. “Okay, we can’t say it enough, you have to vote to save your favorites from tonight’s double elimination.”

Simmons’ scores were all the more confusing considering he didn’t give Tran, 26, or Parks any negative feedback. He told Parks and Chmerkovskiy, 38, that he was “a big fan of the bad boy and bad girl” dynamic of their routine, telling Tran, “Besides being beautiful, you deliver results.”

It was sometimes hard to tell what exactly was going on in Simmons’ head. He gave Stefanus Nedoroscik an eight, but seemed stunned by the 25-year-old Olympian’s breakdancing moves.

While some Dancing With the Stars contestants are understandably eliminated because of their two left feet, other contestants are sent home way too early. The voting system received an overhaul for season 28, following radio host Bobby Bones’ controversial win a season earlier, but the change didn’t stop formidable competitors from leaving the ballroom. “What was that thing you suddenly did on the ground? What was that?” he asked Nedoroscik about his Foxtrot with partner Rylee Arnold.

Cohost Alfonso Ribeiro stepped in to explain, “He’s a gymnast,” and judge Bruno Tonioli added that the vaulting horse specialist is “very flexible”.

Simmons then threw up his hands and decreed, “No comment.” Although he was not impressed with Nedoroscik’s breakdancing, he generally seemed to like him.

“If they were giving out awards, I’d give you a gold award. But I want to tell you something very important. You have so much personality in that body of yours. Glasses? Don’t worry, Superman wears glasses,” he told Nedoroscik, who has been compared to Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, because of his glasses.

While Simmons certainly kept the Hair Metal night interesting, the elimination results were not surprising. Reginald VelJohnson and his partner, Emma SlaterAnd Eric Roberts and his partner, Britt Stewartwere sent home at the end of the double elimination episode after consistently being at the bottom of the leaderboard.
