Gavin Newsom jokes about Harris’ no-primary nomination, laughs he was ‘told’ to call it inclusive

California Gov. Gavin Newsom joked about the process that gave Vice President Kamala Harris the Democratic presidential nomination. In an interview Friday, he said he was “taught to say” it was an open, inclusive process.

President Biden’s blockbuster announcement last month that he would end his reelection bid for a second term in the White House resulted in Harris replacing him at the top of the ticket. She has since enjoyed a resurgence in polls and fundraising, but has never received a vote as the Democratic Party quickly embraced her to lead the ticket.

Critics of the Democratic Party charged that Harris got the nomination without the voters’ will, but Newsom apparently found the process amusing.

“We went through a very open process, a very inclusive process. It was bottom-up, I don’t know if you know that. That’s what I was told to say,” Newsom said with a laugh during a conversation with “Pod Save America” posted Friday.

Newsom then joked that Democrats held a 30-minute meeting between Biden’s July 21 tweets announcing he was dropping out of the race and then endorsing Harris.

“It’s great,” joked Newsom, who is widely seen as having White House ambitions of his own.

Democrats such as Nancy Pelosi have claimed the nomination was not rigged in Harris’ favor after Biden withdrew

The clip drew criticism when it circulated on social media on Friday.

“The Democratic Party is laughing all the time about how anti-democratic, vote-free and secret their process was to choose the new Democratic presidential nominee and then impose it on the country,” journalist Glenn Greenwald responded.

Another critic added: “Gavin Newsom knows the Harris nomination was a top-down coup, and they’re all cynical about it. Is this the ‘democracy’ they’re trying to save? What a sick joke about their own supporters and this country.”

CEO of the Institute for Black Solidarity with Israel Dumisani Washington wrote: “The party that always screams about DEI and White privilege loves to use DEI to flaunt their White privilege. Isn’t it funny to screw the voters?”

Harris officially accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday evening.

Biden won the party’s nomination in March against minimal opposition, but everything changed after his disastrous debate performance in June. Media allies and fellow Democrats who had defended his mental acuity and fitness for office changed their tune and called for him to drop out of the race. Despite his initial claims that only God could get him out, he eventually buckled under the pressure and stepped aside.
