Fans full of emotion as Tigers win first home game in more than a decade

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit roared for its first Tigers playoff game in 10 years, and despite the start time around noon, the fans were in full force.

The victory was a moment a decade in the making, as fans and emotions poured into the streets of Detroit after the game.

“I’m getting all emotional. I’m going to cry,” Tigers fan and season ticket holder Sandra Sears said. “I think this is even more fun just because of where we come from. We had such a breakdown and everyone said, ‘Have faith, have faith.'”

Longtime season ticket holders Hal and Lindsey Schwartz have been to many games but say this one ranks near the top.

“I grew up with him (dad), so it’s a great memory to be here,” said Lindsey Schwartz.

“Winning today with Lindsey is great,” Hal Schwartz said fighting back tears.

For seven-year-old Anna Harrison, it was her first playoff game for the Tigers. It was an experience she was able to experience together with her mother Franchesca. With half a day of school, the two headed into town and ended up scoring last-minute tickets.

“She was like, ‘Mommy, we gotta get in there’ and I made it a mission where we got in there,” said Franchesca. “We’re just so lucky.”

Even those without tickets still headed downtown, with some fans climbing the fence outside the park in an attempt to get a peek inside.

“We walked around for a while and then we keep hearing the noise. So it’s like you know what? I need to see what’s going on.” Tigers fan Kaneisha Barnes said. “The problem is that we don’t have a view of a scoreboard, but you can see from the noise that they are having a good time.”

Others flocked to downtown bars, such as Harry’s Detroit Bar & Grill, to experience the game. The bar had more staff and saw sales increase when the normal pre-match lunch crowd of 30 to 40 people reached almost 500 people.

“We really enjoyed this extra push we got from the Tigers,” Harry’s general manager Hugh Leonard said. “With everything else happening between the concerts and the Red Wings starting tomorrow, it’s just an added bonus.”

A team that was once counted out is now in the midst of a magical run. It’s a story of faith that fans and the city fully embrace.

“It’s important for these young kids playing now, it’s important for this old Tiger here, it’s important for this city,” said fan Karyn Brown.

‘It’s been a long time for the fans’ said Sears. “We are fans through thick and thin.”
