F1 2024 Italian Grand Prix starting grid after Piastri decision

The McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will start the 2024 Italian Grand Prix from the front row.

Piastri retained his second starting position after stewards fined McLaren €10,000 for unsafely releasing the car into the path of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull during Q1 at Monza.

It has become common for unsafe releases during qualifying to result in penalties for the team rather than the driver, as it is the team’s responsibility to safely release their cars from the pits.

Norris and Piastri have given McLaren its first front-row seat at Monza since 2012, when Lewis Hamilton replaced Jenson Button.

They will start ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and the two Ferraris, led by Charles Leclerc.

Lewis Hamilton, a 2025 Ferrari driver, will start from sixth place, ahead of the two Red Bulls: Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

Red Bull had a miserable race in Monza on Saturday and if the McLarens and Red Bulls finish where they started on Sunday, the lead in the Constructors’ Championship will go to McLaren.

The top 10 on the grid is completed by Alex Albon’s Williams and Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas.

Williams’ new driver Franco Colapinto will start his first Formula 1 Grand Prix from 18th on the grid.
