Ex-Red Sox Outfielder Seen as Top MLB Trade Target; Reunion Would Make Sense

Boston Red Sox baseball executive Craig Breslow was actively involved in the trade deadline but has yet to make any significant improvements to the major league roster.

The biggest move by the new head of baseball operations was to trade promising second baseman Nick Yorke for right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will go to Triple-A Worcester and develop into a starting pitcher for the future.

As for additions that will help Boston right away? Left-hander James Paxton and catcher Danny Jansen will join the team’s postseason chase. Breslow is still expected to try to add a reliever and right-handed bat by Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.

Could a former Red Sox outfielder be the hitter they need in the short-hitting market?

“Kevin Pillar, who has said he will likely retire at the end of the year, will get a chance to close with a contender,” Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Sunday. “There’s a lot of interest in the Angels’ veteran outfielder.”

Pillar has a .287 batting average with 20 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, 32 RBIs and an .824 OPS (128 OPS+) in 68 games this season between his time with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels this season.

In an ideal world, the Red Sox would find an impact hitter who is right-handed and can play the infield. But the market is not ideal, with less than 24 hours left and few options to choose from.

If Pillar makes the team, the Red Sox will have an experienced player with above-average offensive production and a strong defensive background, but he has regressed considerably since his time with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 35-year-old played 30 games for Boston during the Covid-19-shortened 2020 season, but has yet to experience what it’s like to be supported by a rabid Red Sox fan base since no fans were allowed that year.
