The official AP top 25 college football rankings aren’t released until next Tuesday, but ESPN used an eventful Week 0 to revise its own 134-team rankings after Florida State lost its season opener to Georgia Tech in Ireland on Saturday.

The outcome has no direct impact on the national picture, but it does change the ACC’s standings based on the College Football Power Index computer rankings.

Georgia Tech (up 17). As expected, the Jackets’ surprise win over the Seminoles propelled the team to No. 37 in the nation in ESPN’s poll. They are projected to win seven games with a 76 percent chance of qualifying for a bowl.

SMU (5 down). The The ACC newcomer narrowly lost to big underdog Nevada in the season opener, but still managed to pull off a narrow victory. The team is expected to go 8-4 on the index this season.

Florida State (lost by 5 points). A loss in the season opener to the team ranked No. 10 in the AP also caused the Seminoles to lose their pole position in the ACC title race. The team is now ranked No. 6 according to the index, meaning FSU will be 7-5.

The Football Power Index (FPI) college football rankings and computer prediction models are a measure of a team’s strength and predict a team’s future performance.

Rankings and score predictions are based on 20,000 simulations of a team’s season and matches, using a combination of key analytics including scores to date, quality of opponents, team talent, recruitment and team schedule.

Teams are not ranked based on talent, as in other rankings, but based on a projected points margin per game against an average team on a neutral field.
