England’s white-ball head coach Matthew Mott has stepped down following their Twenty20 World Cup semi-final exit by eventual champions India last month, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday.

England assistant manager Marcus Trescothick has been appointed on an interim basis to replace the Australian.

Since his appointment in May 2022, the 50-year-old Mott has helped England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year and led the side to white-ball series victories against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand and Pakistan.

“I am incredibly proud to have been given the opportunity to coach the England men’s team. It has been an honour,” Mott said in a statement.

“We have pushed hard to achieve success over the past two years and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion the team has shown during that time, including a tremendous T20 World Cup victory in 2022.”

Former England batsman Trescothick, 48, will lead the team on an interim basis for the remainder of the home summer, including a white-ball series against Australia in September.

“He (Mott) can be proud of his achievements as he steps down as one of only three coaches to have ever won a World Cup with England,” said Rob Key, ECB chief executive of the England men’s cricket team.

“After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I believe the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead. This decision has not been taken lightly, but I believe this is the right time for the future success of the team.

“The search for a full-time replacement begins now. It is essential that we go through the right process to ensure we get the best person for the job.”
