Selena Gomez has been open about her mental and physical health struggles in the film industry for over two decades. But the actress-turned-pop star is now opening up for the first time about another heartbreaking obstacle she’s faced.

“I’ve never said this before,” the “Emilia Perez” star told Vanity Fair. “But unfortunately I can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s life in danger.”

“I had to grieve over that for a while.”

In 2013, Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks its own healthy tissue. She underwent chemotherapy and in 2017, at age 24, she had a kidney transplant due to complications from the disease.

“It’s not necessarily the way I imagined it,” Gomez continued of her path to motherhood. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone else. (But) I’m in a much better place. I think it’s a blessing that there are amazing people out there who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge opportunities for me.”

Gomez’s family has already been hit by the latter. Her mother, Mandy Teefey, is adopted. “I probably wouldn’t be here (if my mom hadn’t been adopted). I don’t know what her life would have been like. She and I are very grateful for how life has turned out.”

As for the options, the “Only Murders in the Building” star is grateful. “I’m really grateful for the other outlets for people who want to be mothers. I’m one of those people,” she admitted. “I’m excited about what that journey will look like, but it’s going to look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’s going to be mine. It’s going to be my baby.”

Gomez was single for five years until July 2023, when she met her current boyfriend, music producer Benny Blanco. Even without a partner, Gomez says she planned to expand her family to 35.

“Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, except for a few dates,” she revealed. “And I was like, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, what’s the most important thing to me? Family.'”

Gomez, who has been linked to several other A-listers including Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and Nick Jonas, raved about her relationship with Blanco. “I’ve never been more loved,” she said. “He’s just a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything.”

And while things are going well between the couple, Gomez says she’s in no rush to get married. “We always make sure to protect what we have, but there are no rules,” she said. “I want him to always be himself. I always want to be myself.”

Being herself also means that she won’t be making any name changes in the future. “I’m not changing my name, no matter what. I’m Selena Gomez. That’s all.”
