Eagles News: Jalen Hurts Needs to Be Smarter About Football

Let’s go to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Roob’s Observations: Barkley Electric in Debut, Eagles Escape Brazil with Win Over Packers – NBCSP
5. Jalen Hurts did some nice things, threw for 278 yards, nice TDs to AJ Brown and Saquon Barkley, made some really nice plays, especially on that final game-clinching drive. But, damn it, he really needs to stop throwing interceptions. Every quarterback is going to throw some. It’s going to happen. But both of his INTs Friday night were just pointless throws and looked far too much like the forced INTs from last year, when he tied for the NFL lead with 15 interceptions. Just throws into traffic with no chance of success. The first one, he just threw up into a crowd of four Packers. The second one, from the Packers’ 14 — with the Eagles needing a field goal for an eight-point lead — he tried to force it to AJ Brown in the end zone, where everything is condensed and guys don’t stay open very long. This is Year 5 for Hurts, and he now has 17 interceptions in 18 games since opening day last year after throwing just six in 2022. I get that it’s a new offense he’s learning, but this is just basic Quarterback 101 stuff. He needs to be smarter with the football.

Eagles Survive the Pack – Iggles Blitz
The key to the game was Jalen Hurts, in a good way and a bad way. He threw impressively to AJ Brown for a 67-yard TD pass. Hurts ran over a defender to get a 1st down at the end of the game. That was a key play. He threw a slant to DeVonta Smith to nearly decide the game. Hurts finished 20-34-278 with a pair of TDs. But… he also threw a pair of INTs. Both were terrible plays. The first came when the Eagles were backed up and facing 3rd and long. Hurts threw the ball over the middle of the field and it was intercepted. Late in the game, he threw to the sideline and a DB dropped a long pick-six. On the next play, Hurts was late over the middle and his pass was intercepted in the end zone, costing the Eagles three points. They were up 34-29 at the time. A FG would have given the Eagles an eight-point lead. You can’t make that mistake. Hurts’ decision-making was problematic far too often. I hope this was sloppiness because he didn’t play in the preseason. Still, a veteran QB should know how to protect the ball better than Hurts did. That’s worth looking at.

Eagles beat Packers in Brazil as Saquon Barkley shines in debut, 34-29 – Bleeding Green Nation
The Philadelphia Eagles are 1-0 after opening their 2024 season with a Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil! Final score: 34 to 29. That’s a key win over a team that the Eagles could potentially challenge for an NFC playoff spot with, depending on the outcome of Jordan Love’s injury. This certainly wasn’t an overall pretty game for the Birds. Early on, the offense certainly resembled a non-preseason unit with two straight turnovers to start the game. But Kellen Moore eventually got things going, in part by relying on Saquon Barkley, who had a stellar debut with 132 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns.

Week 1 in Brazil: Packers Winners and Losers vs. the Eagles – Acme Packing Company
Winner: The Field (Derogatory). The field at Arena Corinthians absolutely stole the show tonight. Players on both teams struggled to find their feet all night, leading to incomplete passes, shortened runs, and overall sloppy play. The quality of the field downright diminished the product tonight, and I imagine the league is at least a little unhappy about it. Soldier Field, a new stinker of a contender, has entered the chat.

8) The ‘Gamechanger’ Award: Reed Blankenship. The turning point of the game may have been Reed Blankenship’s INT of Love with about 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. He read the route, trusted what he saw, and made a great play. The Eagles would score a TD on the ensuing possession.

Saquon Barkley’s debut will raise questions about Giants’ failure to retain him – PFT
It was one thing for the Giants to let running back Saquon Barkley walk in free agency. It was another to watch him slide down I-95 to join one of their biggest rivals. And it was Barkley’s debut for the Eagles — throwing for three touchdowns in a 34-29 win over the Packers in Brazil — that will reignite questions about why the Giants let him go. Barkley became the first Eagles player to throw for three touchdowns in his debut since receiver Terrell Owens 20 years ago. Barkley had 103 rushing yards, to go with 23 receiving yards. His performance underscored concerns raised, and ultimately ignored, by director of pro personnel Chris Rossetti during the ill-conceived offseason Hard Knocks.

Saquon Barkley stuns Eagles, explodes for 3 TDs in debut – ESPN
It was the kind of impact the front office was hoping for when it gave him a three-year, $37.75 million contract in free agency. Barkley has had months to imagine what it would be like to play behind that offensive line and alongside playmakers like Hurts, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert. What he envisioned was “kind of similar, I guess you could say.” “I think it’s so special that of all the guys we have on this team that are so talented, and today might have been my day to score touchdowns, it was never a hate, none of that,” Barkley said. “It was like, ‘Go ahead, go get four.’ That’s what you need with a team like this that has that many stars. It’s going to continue throughout the season.”

NFL Week 1 Recap: Philadelphia Eagles 34, Green Bay Packers 29 – PFF
Saquon Barkley had a dream debut for the Eagles, scoring three times to put his team out of reach of the Packers. Barkley rushed for 24 for 109 yards and two scores, averaging an impressive 3.6 yards after contact per carry and three explosive runs of 10 or more yards. He added two catches for 23 yards and another touchdown as a receiver, showing how effective he can be in both facets of the game.

NFL 2024 Season, Week 1: What We Learned From Eagles’ Win Over Packers In Brazil – NFL.com
Tumultuous night for both QBs. Jalen Hurts’s night couldn’t have started much worse: He threw an interception on Philadelphia’s first drive, then botched a premature snap, resulting in two giveaways on two possessions. He eventually settled down and led four consecutive scoring drives of 62 or more yards, but still took unnecessary risks, appeared to panic in the pocket at times and threw a terrible interception in the end zone with a chance to tie the game in the fourth. Jordan Love had a similarly inconsistent night, throwing a pair of long passes and firing a touchdown pass to Christian Watson while also taking a few odd risks, including one that was intercepted by Reed Blankenship, and missing open targets. If anything, we were reminded that it’s still a new season for some of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, and we should be prepared for a rollercoaster ride — made even more troubling when Love went down in the game’s final seconds with an apparent lower leg injury.

2. Rookie Quinyon Mitchell can play. Sorry to be Captain Obvious here, but it’s worth noting: Mitchell stepped right into the starting lineup at cornerback and battled, made some plays, made some mistakes, then came back and made more plays. He looks polished, poised, extremely talented, and on his way to big things. Very strong debut with Mitchell and Darius Slay starting outside and Avonte Maddox playing in the nickel. The secondary gave up too many big plays, but let’s give the Packers credit: that’s a very good offense that will give any defense a lot of trouble this season.

Majority of Cowboys fans have no confidence in team’s direction – Blogging The Boys
The Dallas Cowboys’ 2024 offseason is finally coming to an end. For some, it can’t come soon enough. The Cowboys’ offseason began seconds after they were trounced in the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers. That disappointing playoff loss may have set the tone for the offseason, and the Cowboys’ front office didn’t seem to do much to change the narrative. They may have even exacerbated the negative sentiment with a questionable “all-in” comment from Jerry Jones that they didn’t seem to follow through on. Of course, the long saga of CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott contract extensions hangs over many like a dark cloud. The Cowboys’ front office dragged Lamb out and is still dragging Dak Prescott out. The Cowboys also lived up to their reputation for being frugal spenders in free agency.

Giants-Vikings Injury Report: Brian Burns Limited in Practice – Big Blue View
The most significant development is the addition of edge defender Brian Burns to the injury report with an ankle injury. This is a surprising development, as Burns was not on the injury report until Friday. Before the addition of Burns, Belton and McFadden were the most influential players on the injury report. Both players are expected to play important roles in their defense, and they could play significant roles this year. Belton is one of the Giants’ most experienced defensive backs, and the Giants could use him against the Vikings’ potentially explosive passing attack. McFadden emerged as a reliable starter last year and helped bolster the Giants’ long-shaky linebacker corps.

Commanders vs Buccaneers Friday Injury Report: Two Players Not Ready to Play in Week 1 – Hogs Haven
The Washington Commanders are preparing for their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with several players nursing injuries from preseason/training camp. Jer’Zhan Newton was limited Wednesday, off Thursday and returned to practice today. Dan Quinn laid out the plan earlier in the week, but listed the second-round pick as questionable for his first NFL game. Marcus Mariota was dealing with a groin injury that limited him to one preseason appearance. Quinn said the injury was minor and he would have been able to play had it been the regular season, but now he’s dealing with a different injury. He suffered a pectoral strain and will miss his first regular season with Washington. Jeff Driskel will serve as backup to Jayden Daniels, and Quinn said the team is comfortable with having two active QBs. UDFA QB Sam Hartman is also available for the practice squad.

Our Expert NFL Picks for Week 1 of 2024 – SB Nation
The narrative heading into Week 1 is one of nervousness. Many fans around the NFL know that this could be a make-or-break status quo season, with organizations like the Jets, Falcons, and Cowboys (among others) having to show what it’s like to move on from status quo in 2024. A strong start will go a long way toward allaying fan fears, making this Week 1 a crucial time to get the ball rolling.
