Dodgers commentator says Shohei Ohtani’s 50/50 game could be ‘greatest individual day in baseball history’

Joe Davis had one of the best seats in the house and delivered perhaps the greatest offensive performance in baseball history.

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani on Thursday became the first MLB player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season, doing so with a 6-for-6 performance that included three homers, two doubles, two stolen bases and 10 RBI.

Davis, the Dodgers’ primary play-by-play announcer, was in attendance, but with his busy schedule, he knew there was a good chance he would miss some actual history. Ohtani entered Thursday’s game with 48 homers and 49 sacks.

“Selfishly, I thought, ‘He’s got to do it today.’ I went to the NFL after the game… My only chance is he leaves here at 48, they pitch around him this weekend and I’m back next Tuesday,” Davis told “The Rich Eisen Show” on Friday.

But when Ohtani stole a base in the first inning, Davis knew it was Thursday or nothing.

But then Ohtani had what Davis described as perhaps “the greatest individual day in baseball history.”

“Just unreal. As fun a day as I’ve ever had in my career,” he said. “I mean, that’s the thing, we talked about it on the air. He could have had this day in mid-May, and it still would have been a day that you could argue is the greatest individual day in the history of baseball. But he did it to get 50/50, and to punch his first ticket to the postseason — all in one day.”

“He keeps doing things that, if you were to present this as a Hollywood script, would be rejected because it’s unbelievable. ‘This stuff doesn’t happen. No one’s going to believe it. It’s a stupid script; too unbelievable.’ And he does this a lot, which means there’s no chance of that happening. He keeps defying expectations in every way possible,” Davis said.

The 2024 season did not start off great for Ohtani, as he was embroiled in a gambling scandal with his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. However, Mizuhara admitted to stealing more than $16 million from Ohtani for gambling purposes, while Ohtani denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of Mizuhara’s wrongdoing.

But now it’s just two weeks until Ohtani’s first playoff game.

Ohtani, a pitcher recovering from elbow surgery and not on the mound this year, has found a way to do things that have never been seen before. He’s the odds-on favorite to win his third MVP Award (he previously won the honor in 2021 and 2023 while playing in the American League). Clearly, that $700 million contract is worth it.
