Disney, FX to win most Emmys in 2024, HBO dives

Even before the Emmys began on Sunday, there wasn’t much doubt about which media conglomerate would end the night with the most awards. Led by 14 Creative Arts wins for ShogunDisney had an unassailable lead in terms of the number of awards won.

The only question was how much the Mouse House would boost the score. The answer: quite a bit.

Guided by Shogun And The Bear — which each won four awards at Sunday’s awards, setting records for wins by a drama (18) and comedy (11) in a single year — FX-produced programming led all platforms with 36 wins at the 76th Emmy Awards. On its own, FX would have tied Disney for the top spot among media conglomerates, but the company also won 24 other awards for a record total of 60.

Netflix came in a distant second with 24 total wins at Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts Awards — two more than it won at the 75th Emmys. HBO/Max won 14 Emmys — the fewest for the Warner Bros. Discovery outlets (which compete as a single entity at the Emmys) in more than a quarter century (HBO had 14 wins in 1998, long before the streaming era). Two other companies, Apple and NBCUniversal, also reached double figures.

While Shogun And The Bear did the heavy lifting for Disney, several other programs also won multiple awards: Disney+’s documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man won five Emmys, the Oscar broadcast won four, and Hulu’s Only murders in the building and FX’s Welcome to Wrexham each had three. Hulu’s comedy How I Met Your Fatherwhich was canceled after its second season, won two awards: for multi-camera cinematography and image editing.

HBO and Max also had a few bright spots on Sunday, including three wins for Max Tricks (Best Comedy Series, Written for a Comedy and Lead Actress Jean Smart). Last week tonight with John Oliver won two Emmys and Alex Edelman: Especially for us won the award for Best Screenplay for a Variety Special (and featured one of the most moving acceptance speeches on Sunday, when Edelman paid tribute to the live show’s director, Adam Brace, who died in 2023).

HBO/Max’s bad year is likely largely due to timing and a depleted inventory following the strikes. Succession had its last run at the Emmys a year ago, and shows like The last of us And The White Lotus has not aired any new episodes this Emmy year, after winning a combined 13 awards in 2023 — just one shy of HBO/Max’s total this year. Both shows will likely premiere in time to be eligible for the 2025 Emmys, as will House of the Dragon (one Emmy win for the first season).

That’s the future. In the present, the 2024 Emmys belong to Disney, and specifically FX. Here’s a breakdown of the wins by outlet, media company, and program.
