DirecTV vows to fight Disney “for as long as it takes”

Last year, Disney’s battle with Charter Communications lasted until the day of the first Monday night football game of the year. This one could go on longer.

Via Sports Business MagazineDirecTV CFO Ray Carpenter told reporters and analysts that the company will fight Disney “as long as it takes.”

Carpenter said it’s not your average carriage fight.

“This is not the kind of dispute where we’re negotiating a percentage point on a tariff,” Carpenter said. “This is really about changing the model in a way that gives everyone confidence that this industry can survive.”

The Disney networks left DirecTV on Sunday, during the US Open and shortly before kickoff of the LSU-USC match in Las Vegas.

The dispute revolves around DirecTV’s desire to unbundle Disney’s networks so that customers don’t have to pay for content they don’t watch.

“You have to give Disney credit that they haven’t tried to hide their intentions,” Carpenter said. “Not just with their public statements, but also, frankly, with their performance. Disney has publicly indicated that they intend to exploit the wallets of our customers and other pay TV customers to fund and support their DTC apps, while taking the investment in the content and the quality of that content away from linear channels.”

Carpenter also made a pointed comment about sports fans not wanting to watch TV – and kids not wanting to “pay for the rock-skipping contest they had the other day, I think it was ESPN2 or ESPN3.”

Actually, children would be the perfect target group for stone jumping. Assuming that today’s children jump stones. And that they will ever leave home.
